I read some of the posts not all. I thought the true idea of Christmas was not about gifts. Isn't it about the birth of Christ. Shortage or not, it's a good lesson there is more to this holiday and life than hundreds or thousands of dollars spent on toys. Less is actually more.

Exactly but are you new to all of this? People get worse every year with more decorations and gifts. It’s all a competition unfortunately.

I'm not new to this, I think its absurd every year when people talk about spending hundreds or thousands of dollar on each child, not just on this holiday but easter etc. We are a very wasteful country in many respects. The amount of ordering on line, just because... crazy to me. I understand To many people it's not.

It's a competition because adults allow it to be, I'm not sure why either.
Growing up, if I wanted something because others had it, my father would say, what Mr & Mrs have in their home/own is good for them, in this house we dont have it. End of story

Agreed. It’s not going to stop unfortunately though as things seem to get worse. Everyone wants bigger and better. Look at Halloween. The decorating was crazy this year. One trying to outdo the rest.

Or, maybe some people just really enjoy decorating - for themselves, not as a so called competition. Maybe you see everything that way, but not everyone does. I buy gifts for people I love and care about because I really enjoy doing something to make them happy - whether it's a $20 gift or a $100 gift doesn't matter. What matters to me is trying to do something for someone else. It's not a competition unless you make it one. Are most holidays over-commercialized? Sure. But it's extremely cynical to believe that it's all about "competition."

I still think many try and compete to have better than others. Keeping up with the Jones' has turned into trying to outdo the Jones' with many things.

I was at my SILs house this weekend. She lives in a middle class neighborhood in central jersey. Her neighbors spend upwards of $1500 to have people professionally hang their lights. That is completely insane to me even if you can afford it but if you are spending $1500 on Christmas lights when you are most likely living paycheck to paycheck or just have a small savings, I think it's grossly irresponsible no matter how much you like decorating. This was really eye opening for me.

That is a lot of money - but you have no idea what their finances are. I know several people who do the same - and can easily afford it. It makes them happy. Not how I would choose to spend my money, but why judge?

I have heard prices as high as $2,500 from a friend in Dix Hills. Granted she has a big house and can afford it but she feels that is ridiculous when she and her husband are perfectly capable of doing it themselves for much less.

If people think others are not trying to compete with the Jones' than they are delusional. It's more than just keeping up now.

I can guess that it is probably an excessive amount of money for them to spend given the area that they live in, their professions, and the information that I know about them from my SIL.

ETA: going back to hmm's point - wouldn't it be better if they took that money and used it to by gifts for families in need? Wouldn't the lesson that would teach their children be more important than having your lights strung perfectly on your house? I guess that's my point.

I think the season should be about accepting others, being kind and spreading the holiday spirit. What people do with their money is really none of our business to judge. You might think lights are excessive but maybe those people find spending a ton on wine every week or buying expensive handbags, getting their nails done excessive too. Maybe people should donate that money as well? Everyone needs to stop judging things that have nothing to do with them. If they are not asking me for money then I don't give a hoot what they spend it on. And as a disclaimer I do not pay to have my lights hung but I wish I did lol.

Agreed but we all know many who go into debt for Christmas gifts and such just to keep up or top others.

Agreed some just enjoy it.

I can guess that it is probably an excessive amount of money for them to spend given the area that they live in, their professions, and the information that I know about them from my SIL.

ETA: going back to hmm's point - wouldn't it be better if they took that money and used it to by gifts for families in need? Wouldn't the lesson that would teach their children be more important than having your lights strung perfectly on your house? I guess that's my point.

You would think, right?

I think the season should be about accepting others, being kind and spreading the holiday spirit. What people do with their money is really none of our business to judge. You might think lights are excessive but maybe those people find spending a ton on wine every week or buying expensive handbags, getting their nails done excessive too. Maybe people should donate that money as well? Everyone needs to stop judging things that have nothing to do with them. If they are not asking me for money then I don't give a hoot what they spend it on. And as a disclaimer I do not pay to have my lights hung but I wish I did lol.

I think judging is part of human nature, no? Aren't you judging me right now? Judging me as not being accepting of others, caring too much what people spend their money on, etc? Frankly I don't really care what they waste their money on as long they are not wracking up credit card bills that they will never pay, which we all will be paying for.

Judging how people spend their money when you know NOTHING about their finances reeks of insecurity and envy. How others choose to spend their money or live their life is absolutely nobody's business. Period. Some people need to spend A LOT more time being concerned about what goes on in their own lives instead of speculating about and judging others lives. What a waste of energy.

“Five months of bills....” lol

Why do you care? That's their decision. They can make that choice.

Actually I am not judging you at all. I just think it's hypocritical to call out one choice people make and deciding that they should be donating the money instead without being inclusive to every single thing we all do on a daily basis that is probably frivolous and could be donated as well. I also spend on things I don't need but that is no one's business but my own unless I personally put it out there for a debate.

Guess they missed the Keeping up with the Jones' society we live in and have lived in for many decades.

Remember that commercial with the guy saying I am up to my eyeballs in cc debt? He was smiling like he was all happy and he was drowning because he had to have the biggest house, car, ride on mower, etc.

Not saying everyone who decorates to the hilt and buys expensive presents for Christmas can't afford it and can afford to help others but if you think many do it just so their kids can say they got this or that and keep up with their friends must live under a rock.

Who cares what the motivation is for why people do what they do. It's NOT your business. Do YOU and don't concern yourself with what others have, do or spend...............you'll be a far happier person that way.

Who said I was not happy? That's a big assumption to make that is absolutely wrong. I won't go into debt though for a holiday or vacation to just try and impress everyone else. THAT is why I am happy because I do with what I have and make the most and best of it.

Agreed some just enjoy it.

But FTR, you continually make assumptions about others based on your very limited knowledge of what you *think* you know about them. You assume everyone goes into debt just to impress others, you assume nobody could possibly have enough money to afford things like a light decorator for their house, you assume that anyone with a big house is overextending themselves, you assume that people are unhappy and say otherwise just for appearances, you assume anyone with money is selfish and does nothing for others, and the list goes on and on.

But back to my original point which is that nobody knows what people have and nobody is entitled to any explanation as to why someone chooses to live their life the way they do. MYOB and just worry about yourself. It's a better way to live your life.

Not assuming anything. Again, I mentioned a commercial from a few years back basically making fun of keeping up with the Jones' which the guy is not very happy but seems to be to look the part.
I guess the marketing team just made this assumption up of people who live in big houses and have expensive cars and material items are just over their head in debt to try and impress others.

It's a commercial.. to sell a service... not a representation of everyone with a big house and nice things. You just over generalize. Constantly.

And plenty of people make a $hit ton of money and can afford whatever life they so choose without ever going into debt.

Anyway, not really up for debating, we'll just go on circles. I made my point, it's obviously over your head.

I guess the marketing team just made this assumption up of people who live in big houses and have expensive cars and material items are just over their head in debt to try and impress others.

And plenty of people make a $hit ton of money and can afford whatever life they so choose without ever going into debt.

Anyway, not really up for debating, we'll just go on circles. I made my point, it's obviously over your head.

I never said otherwise. Just talking about the people who don't. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Agreed some just enjoy it.

Why is insecurity and envy/jealousy always your go to? I can assure you I am definitely not jealous of the people in my SILs neighborhood. In fact, by nature, I am not a jealous person mainly because I have everything in life that I want and need. And then some, to be completely honest.

Frankly I don't really care how they spend their money. I said I find it irresponsible. I didn't say I found it reprehensible. Try learning some vo-cab-u-lary.
