Toys everywhere!

How do you contain the toys?

Half my living room- toys.
My entire guest room- toys.
Most of my basement- toys.
Half the utility room- toys.

I have ONE child. Her favorite things to play with are ketchup packets and construction paper. What am I doing wrong? Why does it look like TRU dumped all their leftover merchandise in my house? Help me. Please. How do you organize the toys?

Toys everywhere!

We use a lot of those furniture pieces with the compartments and the big bins - colorful ones for the basement but more subdued for the living room. The kids can put the toys away themselves and it still looks somewhat neat and organized. I try not to let the toys take over the living room though. Before bed, they all go away (NOT in the living room).

If she has that many toys, you could also consider packing some away and rotating them out from time to time.

I have my kids divided into baskets (2) plus they have each have a Mickey rocker and I have 2 busy towers. And a few cars since they love cars My kids only get minimal toys and I rotate them. After feeling overwhelmed at Christmas, I boxed all they didn’t use anymore and stored all that were too advance, I take out new stuff periodically but for every new item, 1 goes away and in a bin which will be donated come spring and when I have more time to clean. I won’t allow all the toys because it strssses me

Like a pp said, neutral furniture and bins in the living room (although we keep minimal stuff there) and more colorful obvious stuff in the playroom. We have a small house and every toy under the sun so i just find space where i can. Play doh and crafts take up with bottom half of my pantry bc it's in the dining room where they use it, board game are in my closet so I can get to them when the younger one's napping, most other stuff in the play room. We have 12 cubes with different baskets and organizers in them. Big things like little people house and castle are one top of the cubes x. We have a 3 drawer organizer with all the tiny dolls and accessories in one drawer, barbies and accessories in the other two. The toy kitchen stores all the related toys, a desk has more art stuff, and the closet is a Dr. Seuss pile of other toys and activities. It definitely looks like a toy store in there but it's organized, everything gets put away at the end of the day, and we can find everything easily.

We don't allow toys to live in any room but the playroom. We have a dedicated playroom. My son is allowed to bring toys into another room to play but they must be picked up and put away when the day is over. In the playroom, we use the Trofast storage system from Ikea which is a blessing. It is so adaptable for different toys.
Since we put this in place, life is so much better.

Re: Toys everywhere!

We have a closet room, it is 7x12 and it has shelving lining the walls. They have some toys in their bedroom, but most toys live in the "toy room." It helps to have clearly defined shelves for toys so my kids know where to put things back once they are done playing.

Re: Toys everywhere!

We store a lot of the toys they don't play with in huge plastic totes, and keep them out of view. Im trying to keep the toys they really love out within reach, and the ones they don't play with as often, in the attic. 6 months can go by, and they don't realize the stuff is missing.

Sometimes, if they get extra bored, we'll go digging and play "keep or donate". Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't :)

I keep small & medium pretty baskets/ cloth bins around the house so that we can keep what they do have corralled. We also have one of those wired metal baskets on wheels that are partitioned. We keep that around to help sort. I try to get them to keep the baskets empty and keep their toys in their room.
