Toys R Us is sexist
I had to get a gift for a 4 year old girl last night in Toys R Us. I had not been in that store since I think I was 4.
One side of the store was for Boys and the other side was for Girls.
Crayons and bikes are gender neutral.
The boys sections had aisles marked Sports, Action Figures, Trucks etc.
The girls side had Dolls, Barbie, Princesses etc. One section really stood out to me though they have a section for girls called Cooking and Cleaning!!
After finally getting my dh to put the Hulk hands away and stop playing with guitar hero we left. I told him I was so mad and I plan on writing a letter to the president of Toys R Us. I want a new section for boys added called Opening Really Tight Jars and Taking Out The Garbage.
If the girls have to know what they are in for so should the boys. Please sign my petition and add your support.

Re: Toys R Us is sexist
i agree.. i used to work there when i was in HS.. and it was so different, it wasn't so sectioned off like it is now. i think its absurd how they have a "girls Cooking and Cleaning section "

Re: Toys R Us is sexist
i agree, my dh was mad when he was a kid because he wanted a easy bake oven, cooking stuff. His dad said that is for girls (his father owned a restaurant too!!!) i think cooking/cleaning is neutral not designated for "girls" only.

Re: Toys R Us is sexist
that is sad..my BF growing up was a guy..and i had 2 older brothers...i had one Barbie..could care less about dolls but had a Matchbox car collection, played football and other "boy" type stuff...and thank god everyday because i can change a tire, the oil, and know more about cars than my Dh...who happens to do all the cooking...i mow the lawn...girls can kick arse too...we just have to teach them that they are just as capable...Toys R Us apparently isn't helping here though

Ugh, I hate that store anyway, but that is just awful!
My son is 2 and loves his play kitchen- I hope he will learn how to cook. Everyone should know and his future wife will love him for it

Re: Toys R Us is sexist
crazy, why not go back to days when girls had to take home economics while boys take shop
Surprised they don't have a section for little girls on how to grow up, get married and keep the perfect home for their husband - aka the king of the castle

Can we also add "Changing Flat Tires"?

After finally getting my dh to put the Hulk hands away and stop playing with guitar hero we left.
We were there Tuesday and DH had to take a bouncy ball away from me before we left. I forgot how much fun it is to play ball.
DH used to help his Grandmother cook when he was a kid. He had all kinds of kid sized cooking utensils. Good thing he took to it, because I don't cook at all!

Did they also have available plaques that say...
"If God had wanted me to cook and clean, I would have been born with Stainless Steel hands!"????

Re: Toys R Us is sexist
I shop for my boys in the 'girls' section.
They have an Easy Bake Oven and lots of kitchen stuff. WHEEEEEEEE!
I also routinely by the house fixin' stuff from the boys section for my nieces.
They do have a ball scratching area for the little boys - it's right by the flinging beer tops game.

I remember when they came out for a video game for a girls. It was called "Barbie Goes Shopping."
I'm thrilled when my daughter plays Barbie is running for her train because she's late to work.

Re: Toys R Us is sexist
I hate the way toys are gender separaed. Its not just toys r us. Just watch commercials for this stuff on TV. You think you would ever see a boy in a barbie commercial? Or a girl in a matchbox car commercial? Its absolutely disgusting and I hope that I can avoid assigning gender toys to my children.

Re: Toys R Us is sexist
It completely annoys me that toy stores are so gender oriented, but at the same time, we as a culture seem to allow it to continue. I, however, do not label toys as being for girls or boys when it comes to my child. She should be able to kick anyone's azz with her giant dump truck if she wants to Oh, and she should also feel free to buy all the boys in her life "cooking and cleaning" toys

Re: Toys R Us is sexist
I had to read the OP 4x to get what the problem was . . . I still don't see it, but I kept thinking I was missing something.
Anyway, if it bothers you definitely write a letter! I'm a big fan of letters to companies but always too lazy to follow through and actually do it!
