Toys to bring camping with 3yo and 1.5yo

We're taking our sons to a cabin the Adirondacks next week and I'm trying to limit the number of toys to bring. Anybody have suggestions on what are light, easy to pack, versatile toys?

We'll be there for five days and we'll be hiking, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, hanging around a campfire, etc. I'm bringing the portable DVD player just in case it rains one or more days and I'm planning on hitting the local library to pick up some books when we get into town.
I want things that are quiet, easy to pack, and little: a couple of Memory games, animal flashcards, glow sticks, a carrier case/box of trains and cars.

Any camping BTDT moms with advice??

Re: Toys to bring camping with 3yo and 1.5yo

We recently went camping in the White Mountains, my DDs are 5 and 2. I hit up the dollar bins at Target and made them each a bag with stickers, little books, stuff like that. My kids don't get a lot of stuff, so this was like amazing for them! Also, I went to the bargain section in Barnes and Noble and got them each a book with a little magna-doodle type thing attached. They LOVED them, and it was good because they could be occupied with drawing and I didn't have to worry about crayons, markers etc.

Good luck and have a great time!!

Don't forget a bucket and shovel for them to dig. My kids love digging and dumping.

Sounds like fun... but how do you go kayaking and canoeing with a 3 yr old and 1.5 yr old. I could never do that! Chat Icon

Family friends of ours have an insert for the kayaks that help keep the LOs safely/snugly held. I am, however, a little worried about the canoe....Chat Icon

Please reconsider bringing the babies kayaking and canoeing. Even if you have something that secures them within the boats, god forbid the boats should tip over, the children would be trapped underneath. Your call, your kids but I would never even think twice about not putting them in that situation.

Absolutely -- even though we are planning on doing the tip tests for both the kayak and the canoes, DH and I agree that these activities will need to be Mom-approved, ie if we get there and it just doesn't feel right --- the kids are NOT going in the boats. We'll see how it goes....

The insert for the kayak is like a sock that goes around the DCs but it doesn't attach them to the boat so God forbid I lose control of the kayak and we tip over, the DC can easily come out with us instead of being attached to the kayak.

For the canoe, we are taking the approach our other family members have: LOs need to kneel directly in front of the people with the paddles...
