Has anyone had a dog with a tracheal collapse? How was it diagnosed? What treatment did you go with? What was the prognosis? What kind of dog do you/did you have? I have a petite beagle and we think it might be that.

Re: Tracheal Collpase

We have yorkies and it's a trait of theirs.
My old guy has it, no treatment, nothing to do for him.
He makes the choking noise the most when he gets excited but it's certainly not a constant thing.

Re: Tracheal Collpase

My petite beagle had this also. The vet said I shouldn't over excite him or take him for walks because it took so long for him to catch his breath and calm down. He passed away last month from other issues at almost 14 years old. I miss him so much.

ETA .......we didn't have any treatment recommended. I think because he had his other issues. I wasn't even aware there was treatment.

Re: Tracheal Collpase

my maltese who passed this year has it for his last couple of years. He would sound like he was choking and then let out a loud cough. It was diagnosed with an xray at the vet. Given his age, there was no treatment recommended but we were told to not get him overly excited or take him for walks and also, no leash on him and that if needed, we should use a harness. We would greet him as soon as we walked in because that's when he would get most excited and gasp. It broke my heart to hear him that way but I can say that he lived very happily for his remaining few years, it seemed to bother us more than him.
