Transportation for people that are ill
Does anyone know any agencies etc...that provide transportation for the elderly or sick located in queens area? The only thing I could think of aside from other peoples referrals is calling a hospital. Unfortunately I am out here in the boonies. what hospitals are by the whitestone area? If anyone knows any transportation agencies please let me know as well. Thanks so much.

What kind of transportation are you looking for? If you're talking about taking an elderly person to the doctor, etc - you can call a private ambulette company - a big one is Metrocare. Insurance doesn't always cover though.

Thats exactly what I am looking for. My DH aunt has cancer now for about 20 plus years and its getting worse. she drives herself to the dr's which I think is crazy and I am trying to convince her to use tansportation. Though I told her it would be covered through insurance. I thought it was but I guess I need to check into that. Thanks for the info.

No problem - it will depend on her insurance - what they cover, how often, etc. Good luck!

The best way to go about finding transportation would be to contact her insurance company. They should have a list of approved companies and should be able to give you more info about what is/isn't covered.
Good Luck! I know this stuff can be stressful...

Re: Transportation for people that are ill
When my grandmother lived in Brooklyn she got rides on ambulettes through this service called Access-A-Ride. I'd ask her more about it but her memory really isn't what it used to be. I'm sorry.

Re: Transportation for people that are ill
My grandfather has been transported by ambulette for the last few months to and from dialysis 3x/week and normal insurance does not cover it. I know for a fact that Medicare and AARP do not because that's what he has and we've been paying $260/week! Medicaid DOES cover it but that is income based and it's a 3 - 4 month application process. I would ask her doctor's office for a list of companies or they may have other patients who use a company that they can recommend.
The price will also vary depending on how ill the person is, whether they can get in and out on their own, are in a wheelchair, have to be transported by stretcher and even if they're on oxygen. It's terrible how much these people have to pay.

My dad works for American Medical Response and they are a private ambulette company.
Here is the website
AMR
Maybe you can call them and see what they offer.
Good Luck!

Re: Transportation for people that are ill
Thank you everyone for your help. I will continue to look into the info you've given me. I told them since this last time she was in the hospital she should not have left without having asomeone set this up. I know the applic process seems to take a while. the best place to always get what you need is while you are in the hospital. I also think her severity "visually" I mean looking at her seems okay. However, this woman has had cancer spread all over her body. I dont think its right for her to be driving after chemo seesions for in regard to her own safety and those around her.
