Trapping a feral cat nightmare story (VERY LONG) and a BIG THANKS to REGGIE!!
Because of Reggie’s link to professional trappers from LICP.com and her FMs of support I was able to trap one of the females from my colony and her FOUR 1 day old kittens!!
I wanted to trap a pregnant Momma at the colony I manage, so she would have her kittens in a safe environment and the kittens would be used to people and be adoptable. If the kittens are raised with Mom outside, sometimes I can’t even get near them, and they wind up feral and it’s really hard to get them homes. This particular cat had a litter earlier this season and I think they all died. She was pregnant, disappeared from the colony for a MONTH and then came back skinny with no kittens, so I was worried maybe she’s too skinny to produce enough milk to sustain kittens. She’s a feral I can’t get close to, occasionally I can pet her, but there's no way I could pick her up or anything. When I called the professional trappers from the links Reggie gave me, they were all saying a drop trap would be the way to go, since she's too smart to go in a regular live trap. I had never heard of a drop trap before. So, I found instructions on the internet on how to build one & had one built by a friend of mine. Then yesterday I went down there to trap her and I saw her come out of the bushes and she looked skinny. So, she walked toward the area where I feed them and I look in the bushes and there are 4 kittens! She was still pregnant Friday night, so they couldn’t be more than a day old! So I picked up the kittens and put them in the drop trap, she went in to get them (she was NOT happy that I moved them!) and I trapped her!!
Weeeeeellll, with a drop trap once you open the back door they’re just supposed to think it’s an exit and just go in the transfer carrier, well she wouldn’t go in!!!!!!!!! So I had to call one of the trappers to come and help me. The trapper had this ‘tool’ and she just was able to push Momma in the transfer carrier. Then I picked up the babies, put them in another carrier and then took them to Save-a-Pet where they put Momma back with her kittens. I am SOOOO HAPPY!!!!!!!!! I was SOOOO STRESSED all afternoon yesterday trying to get her to go in the darn transfer carrier, but it was worth it! The kittens will be safe and Momma will get plenty of food and fresh water! Oh, the area where the cats are is not the greatest because the people who own the property don't want the cats, so the cats know to stay away, but I worry about the poor defenseless kittens! BUT NOW THEY'RE SAFE! YAY!! THANKS Reggie!! Without your links and support I wouldn’t have known what to do!!! Honestly I was totally FREAKING out yesterday. I trapped her at 9am and we didn't get her to Save-A-Pet until 2pm. I had tried so many different things to get her to go in the darn transfer carrier and nothing had worked. I felt so bad for totally stressing her out, but now today the kittens may have drowned in this rain (they were just on the ground in a area where it tends to get a lot of puddles), so I feel so much better that they're warm and safe and dry!
(I still have kittens from another litter that are ready to be adopted right now and these will be ready in a few months if anyone's looking for kittens)
