Travel Experts-- Whose been to Greece?

I want to start researching for a late Spring trip for me and DH.

I guess we'd go for a week-- perhaps a little longer if we need it, and it's work and vacay budget permitting.

Anyone have any tips, reccos, etc.?

Also- if you went for a week to two-- it would be great if you could give me an idea of what you spent on your vacay-- if you feel comfortable of course.

Re: Travel Experts-- Whose been to Greece?

I personally felt that 3 days in Athens was more than enough time to see the ruins - we spent 1 full day and 2 hals days exploring. There were other parts of Athens (or rather, the surrounding area) that I would have liked to see that we just didn't have time for...perhaps next time.

Because it was our HM we decided to just pick one island as opposed to packing up and travelling to various islands. We chose Santorini...everyone says you must see the island by boat - there is nothing like coming up on those huge red cliffs from the water - we took a day excursion on a sailboat. We flew into Santorini from Athens - quick flight.

Fira is the main town - it's where all the cruise boats come into. There are a lot of nick-nacky shops and restaurants and "clubs". We stayed in Oia...it was romantic and quaint but still filled with lots of things to do...or nothing at all - depending on how you want to travel. We rented a car to see Fira and visit some wineries...definitely recommend that.

We wanted a boutique-type hotel as opposed to a large chain-type place... something authentic. It was recommended that we stay at Atlantis, Sun Rocks, Oia Mare & Katikies. We wound up booking a suite at Katikies...and if you can budget it, you wouldn't regret staying there. It is heaven from the views to the service to the food to the pool. Absolutely 5 star on every level.

Again, it was our HM so we chose to go balls to the wall and therefore didn't have a budget...so I can't help you there. I will say though that you should not fly Olympic airline...& try to upgrade to business class - it's nice for such a long flight (9 hours or so).

Here are some pics...the first is a shot of the Acropolis from our hotel in Athens. The 2nd is of Ammoudi Bay...the 3rd is a view of Fira from Oia.

Santorini is magnificant
Oia -has amazing, beautiful places to stay right on the water

I think 2 days in Athens is enough

Rhodes was so much fun-we had a great time at the beaches and the shopping and restaurants were good too!

Mykonos-nightlife is great

Re: Travel Experts-- Whose been to Greece?

I went on a cruise, so 1 day at each. I went to:
Athens - saw all the ruins and spent a few hrs walking around the city
Santorini - went to Oia & Fira.
Mykonos - Went to the beaches
Katakolon (olympia) ---- this one you should skip
Corfu - one of the most beautiful places I've seen

Re: Travel Experts-- Whose been to Greece?

We went to Greece on our HM and it was wonderful. We went to Athens, Crete, Rhodes, and Santorini. You definitely don't need more than 3 days in Athens. The best (and most expensive) hotel there is the Grand Bretagne (sp?).

Rhodes was great. It's not as popular of an island so it's a little cheaper and less crowded. There are stone beaches and the water is kind of rough, but it's beautiful there. It's a relaxing place. You can see Turkey from where we were.

Santorini is absolutely gorgeous. We stayed in Oia at the Oia Mare Villas. We really liked the place. I heard Katikies is also an amazing hotel. Oia is known for the sunsets. Even if you don't stay in Oia, definitely head out there one evening. I also loved going down the steps to the Ammoudi harbor. There's a path you can take down there that leads to an area where people go swimming. The water was really calm and it was really nice to swim in the sea.

You'll have a wonderful time.
