Traveling on the train with a dog?
Are small dogs allowed to travel on the train-say from grand central or penn station with you?
I have a 15lb shih tzu- I assume he would have to be in a crate if he is allowed on...
NYC might be in the near future for dh and I- so I want to get an idea...
thanks

yes, we used to bring sophie on the LIRR all the time when we lived in NYC. we took her in the same soft carrier that we use on the plane. it was no problem at all.

does it have to be any particular crate? or as long as they are in something, they are fine...?

Re: Traveling on the train with a dog?
i'm not exactly sure... but i would think carrying a crate around would be very cumbersome. my dog is also 15 pounds, and i've found it much easier to travel with her in a travel bag.
ETA: here is a picture of sophie's carrier from the petsmart website

Re: Traveling on the train with a dog?
yes, actually that size carrier is the upper limit allowed on flights, as far as i understand. the sherpa brand makes it to fit the specifications of most airlines. i have flown with sophie on pretty much every airline (american, delta, united, continental) and no one has ever said anything. GL

oh yes, i bring my dogs on LIRR ALL of the time. i bring them in bags....... OR their stroller. it doesnt really matter. some conducters dont mind if their on your lap.... but some want them in a bag. its not a big deal at all.

thanks so much!
we talked about dog friendly parks months ago because DH was suppossed to be transferred there- but instead we are in GA- now they are thinking of sending him to NYC again- I don't think I want to have my car there since I won't really need it, but I want to be able to get to CT easily when we have to travel home.
Thanks so much!

sophie goes underneath the seat in her carrier. typically we keep her (in the carrier) on our laps except during takeoff and landing. we give her a little bit of benadryl (12.5mg) before we leave for the airport, and it sedates her just a little bit so she doesn't get nervous. she does great! by now she is used to it, and actually gets excited when we take the carrier out. i think she's just relieved to be going with us and doesn't care what it takes to get there!
for info about the carrier, the website is www.sherpapet.com. there a tons of different styles; we went with "the ultimate sherpa bag" in the medium size. sophie fits in it perfectly, and the bag conforms to the airline requirements.
