They do not require a car seat at 4 but if you are renting a car, you will need one so I would bring one along on the plane too.
I had our portable DVD player, snacks, a drink and crayons and paper with me. I also had her Leapster and a magna doodle. It really made the flight easier.

Leap pad, Color Wonder markers (cannot color on anything but the special paper)...
If we are taking a long trip sometimes I'll buy some coloring books or a small toy and wrap it up and give to him when he starts to get antsy and that usually makes him happy... bring snacks too....

When we went to Ireland we brought a portable DVD player it was a life saver!!! We brought plenty of books, some little toys, & some snacks.

I too vote for the color wonder markers and DVD player.. You can have him listen with headphones, and have peace and quiet too... If you don't a movie he wants, you can take himto rent it from the library or a movie store the day before... kinda preps him and gets him excited!!
