Traveling with an active older infant
I am going to Florida in 2 weeks with Jordana, and I have no clue how to fly iwth her.
When we went to CA she was 5 months and fit in her infant carrier. But what do you do with an active 10 month old? Do you bjorn her?
Even if I got her an extra seat, how to I put her in it. She is too little to just be strapped it.
What do I do?

If you buy her a seat then I would bring the carseat on. Will she sleep on you if you pick a flight that is durning or nap time?

We did not buy dd a seat but checked with the airline if there was an open seat. I booked the window and the aisle with the hope that the middle would stay open. When it did we brought our britax on board and she sat in it and actually fell asleep for most of the flight.

is the Britax heavy? We are going away in July when DD will be 16 months and I have no clue what to do. I really didn't want to bring my Britax on a cruise! Shelly, sorry to hijack...

Re: Traveling with an active older infant
We went to Florida when Alex was 8 months old - it isn't worth it to buy an extra seat for such a short flight, and the attendants are REALLY accomodating. They'll try to find you an open seat, if there are any - that's what happened to us. Bring the carseat, just in case a seat opens up, and like Barbara said, the portable DVD player IS a godsend for flights!

Definately bring the carseat with you. Worse case is they check it at the gate if the flight is full. DVD player is a must. Also, not sure if you are into baby carriers, but I love the ERGO carrier, since you can carry the baby piggyback. This was a godsend when I traveled alone with Jack. You have your hands free and more mobility because the child is on your back and not in front. You can use this carrier until your child is 5 years old! Its great. Hands free piggy back.

Re: Traveling with an active older infant
If you buy her a seat, you just bring her carseat on board and strap it in like you do in the car.
We have flown many times with Nate and I've never purchased a seat for him. We usually check-in our carseat, but when we check-in we ask if the plane is full. If not, we'll bring the seat onto the plane. To get around the airport we use our lightweight stroller. DS is not light, so a bjorn would not be an option for us. We just check it in at the end of the jetway.

Re: Traveling with an active older infant
P.S. DO NOT PREBOARD. We made this mistake on our trip to Florida. We ended up waiting 30 mins for everyone to board, and then another 30 mins for the flight to take off. By the time we were ready for take off Alex was sooooo ancy and cranky. Stay at the gate as long as you can, letting Jordana crawl/play until the last minute

Re: Traveling with an active older infant
Thanks guys.
We have a Britax carseat and I am traveling to the airport and to Florida alone. There is no way I can bring the Britax carseat and the baby and our stuff by myself. I am trying to see if she will still fit into her infant seat, and we will take her in that (which is what we did to California).
I have no idea what to do if she doesn't fit into her infant carseat. Any ideas?

She should fit into it - when we traveled to Israel, and Alex was 15 months old and 24lbs, we took the infant seat instead of the car seat because the car seat was too bulky. We didn't use the infant seat in the car, but only for the plane ride. She fit fine, just with her feet hanging over a little. She slept quite well in it on the plane, too. If you can't bring the infant seat, I'd just bring a lightweight stroller to walk around the airport with her (you can't take any of the airport carts past security - we learned that the hard way!) and when you're on the plane, you can just sit her in your lap...

If you are flying Southwest, I would definitely pre-board since the seating is first come first served. Even when we've flown assigned seated flights, we always preboarded. We have NEVER had ANY issues with Nate. We don't strap him in, we'll let him hang out between us until we had to secure him. Many times he even fell asleep before the flight took off.

They have bags that you can put the carseat in and wear it like a backpack - an option if you buy her a seat. I flew to NY once on my own and I had to bring his carseat bc my dad was picking us up and they don't have a carseat. I checked everything in and just had a backpack and his stroller.
I really think you'll be fine if you have to hold her during the flight. It's not as hard as you think.

Re: Traveling with an active older infant
my best friend took her daughter to austrailia due to a family emergency when her dd was 9 months (its a 20+ hr flight from ca! ) and she said the crew helped a lot and her dd was so interested in lokking around she just sat nicely, esp compared to what my friend imagined!.....since her flight was so $$ they didn't buy a seat and since fla isn't to long, just hope for the best! you'll both do great!

Re: Traveling with an active older infant
I agree with all the posters but I also gave DD a decongestant which kinda sent her to sleepy land and I gave her a bottle right during take off so she was full and her ears didnt hurt and off she went in my arms we didnt buy her a seat..

Re: Traveling with an active older infant
Thanks guys!! You have all been a big help!!
I think I will attach the infant car seat to my bugaboo. If she isn't too uncomfortable, I won't even take the main attachment.
If not, that backpack idea sounds great. I will try to find it online.
I am flying Jet Blue- which I flew with her before so I am not going to pre-board.
