Tree people, are they a scam?

i've gotten 4 quotes over the past two days to cut back a large maple that is on my neighbors property.

$2200
$1750
$500
$990

exactly what is the $2200 person doing that the $500 person isn't?? i explained to both of them what i needed done. Owning a house is such a pain in the butt!!!

We had some estimates like that too and I think the higher quotes just don't want to be bothered doing it so they quote you some ridiculous number. Good luck Chat Icon

We had the same experience...I don't understand how it can vary so much either.

Re: Tree people, are they a scam?

Are they removing the tree, or just trimming it?

If they are removing it, ask if they are grinding out the stump and removing all of the wood.

If they are just trimming it, I would ask the high quote why he is so much more. Are they all insured and bonded contractors? The low quote could just be 2 guys with a truck, and the high quote can be a company that carries insurance.

And I do agree with the above poster, the high quote could be really busy and not need the work - but if you are willing to pay double what it's worth, they'll fit you in.

when we moved into our house september we got a tree guy to cut down 8 oak trees and do a full land clear for $3500. Our Oak trees were massive and there were 8 of them. we had gotten prices from 3500-6000
