Tri-Vi-Sol vitamin for breastfed babies-- anyone's baby get sick after it?

DD is EBF (I pump exclusively now). She is 6 weeks.

Just today we started giving her the Tri-Vi-Sol vitamin...not sure if we timed it wrong or what happened, but I gave it to her maybe 30 minutes after she finished a bottle. 15 minutes after that, she spit up a ton and it smelled just like the vitamin. Then, she had her next bottle 2 hours later, only had a few ounces, and spit up a TON....still smelled like the vitamin.

Could it be that she can't tolerate the vitamin for some reason? DD#1 took it just fine when she was a baby. Or maybe I should give it on an empty stomach instead??

She rarely spits up, so it's very out of character.

And why the heck is it flavored like candy? Chat Icon

My DS couldn't tolerate it when he was little. He threw up every time I gave it to him. My ped had me give him plain vitamin D drops instead. A lot of doctors don't even put BF babies on vitamins until 6 months.

Thanks. Sorry to hear your poor son couldn't tolerate it.

Yeah, my doctor was not pushing it, but I figured it couldn't hurt...I guess I'll try giving it to her again tomorrow and seeing if she gets sick again.

It is so bizarre that it's super-sweet smelling too...I mean, what do newborns know about candy-flavored stuff Chat Icon

DD would throw it up within a few minutes. She couldn't stand the taste of it. The ped told me not to worry and to try vitamins again at 6 months. Now she does just fine with them!

DS isn't BF, but his tummy can't tolerate them either. They go right through him...My pedi thought it was weird. So I only give it to him every other day....

DS hated them (not to mention that I couldn't stand the smell) so we switched to Baby D's. It's a 1 DROP dose. I can put the drop on his pacifier and it's done.

Maybe try giving him 1/2 a dose at a time per feeding? I give DS a 1/2 dose in the AM and 1/2 dose in the evening.

DS couldn't do the tri-vi-sol either so the ped recommended that i give him just the D-vi-sol (vit D) drops only and he does fine with those. He loves them but I think it is becuase it is sweet like candy too.

i give DD her dose before a feeding; usually an afternoon one. I just make sure to give her the vitamin slowly (literally takes 5-10 min to dispense a dose) and then she feeds. So far, other than a tiny bit of spit up vitamin that more leaks out of her mouth, we havent had a problem.

My dd is 4 months & I give it to her at night right before her last feeding. She hasn't spit up.

My older girls would always spit always spit up vitamins. Talk to your pediatricianChat Icon
