We live by the water in Lindenhurst...I am praying this is not like Sandy. If it is I am packing up my life and moving to Montana!!
We are one town over by the water and were affected by Sandy.
I've had major anxiety since last night, primarily due to what everyone is posting.
As a positive, I work for the largest health and hospital system for the area, and have not gotten any alerts yet.
We usually do and they tend to be spot on if something big is goiing to hit.
I am planning to get a concrete truck this time around and fill in my basement if it's another Sandy!
I think it will all be ok. We will get up on Monday, have our morning cup of coffee and realize that it won't hit us.

Re: Tropical Storm?
I know the media hypes things but how can you fault anyone for being worried after what so many went through
If I was severely affected and was told to calm Down I would make them Promise to fix any damages lol

Booze is stocked. We are good!
I love Jim Cantore. He just seems to be so into his job! But yep if he is in your town means the storm is coming. Best of luck!

I'm sure you work for the same health system as me.. And you are correct we haven't gotten alerts yet but I give it until tomorrow. I'm also waiting for the emails to go out with contingency plans for staff to stay overnight and rooms to be allocated for staff that will stay. I'm betting tomorrow

Lonnie Quinn doesn't have his sleeves rolled up yet, so it can't be too serious.

Re: Tropical Storm?
I dont get nervous about this crap ever... even with Sandy -- Til we got 3 feet of water in our house... Now I see a dark cloud and I get knots in my stomach. If we get hit again I may seriously commit myself. We are still struggling from Sandy... I will NOT be able to handle another hit.

Tropical Storm?
Category 3 now and it's expected to become a category 4 within 24 hours. I follow islandwide weather on fb and he believes we will not be hit but obviously it's still too early to tell.
The rain that's expected to hit the next few days is not from the hurricane, from what I've read.

I feel like unless people actually went through the hell that was Sandy they won't understand how scary this is. We have a 21 month old and a baby due in 6 weeks. I totally can not handle a flooded house and months without power or heat while I wait for FEMA to get off their ass and cut me a check to replace my furnace even though we pay $4000 a year for flood insurance! I wish it was as easy a picking up a 6 pack and drinking my cares away but for some the idea of a hurricane is the stuff nightmares are made of. Some people may say thats the price you pay for living by the water but when I bought my house it had never flooded before. Not during Irene or even Gloria. Sandy has just left us all so scarred I think.

Re: Tropical Storm?
Even since the blackout/911/Sandy we always stay prepared just in case. Batteries, solar chargers, generator, sump pump, 5 gallon extra gas, you name it, we always make sure it is ready to go for times like this. Live and learn. It is scary and I never want to be running around last minute scrambling for things. If we get hit or not it is never a bad idea to be prepared.

Tropical Storm?
I'm nervous.. I watch closely. They are now saying a category 4 We just moved away from the water (Bayshore) and are now with my parents in Selden until we close. Even though it's no where near the water I still worry about damage. I also worry about my in laws they are in a major flood zone and refuse to evacuate ever. I worry DH will leave during a storm to go check on them. I shouldn't have to worry due to their stupidity and stubbornness!!! During sandy DH and I weren't married/ living together yet and I was a basket case- he wouldn't leave because his parents were there. I can't deal again.

Re: Tropical Storm?
Update: The Euro train is now accepting passengers. All aboard!! The new run of the 12z GFS is in and it takes Joaquin out to sea with no landfall along the east coast. It also gives the NY metro area a mostly dry weekend(especially Sunday). It's solution is what we said would happen this morning. The Carolina's would still see 8-15 inches of rain as a separate front does battle there. Beach erosion and coastal flooding still possible in NJ and Long Island(if you live on the south shore you need to watch that closely as it could get bad for some). The trend east continues as we suggested it would and now out to sea is becoming the much more favorable solution. Landfall along NC/VA coast is now less likely and landfall in NY metro was never an option in our view. The hype and comparisons some in the news media are making are crazy. Too much model casting going on. Some need to go back to good ole fashion forecasting and not model hug. Can it change? Sure but right now the trend is our friend.

I don't think anyone is downplaying the potential for concern considering most people on LI were affected by Sandy in some way - i think all anyone (like myself) is saying is that it is too early to accurately predict what this storm will do, and even if they do predict the hurricane making landfall.. we still do not know how bad it will be until it is actually here. The track of the storm changes daily. So being prepared is great.. but that's all anyone can do. Getting anxious or nervous isn't going to make a storm stay away.. so try and save yourself the worry and just have a plan incase you need it.
