Update:
The Euro train is now accepting passengers. All aboard!! The new run of the 12z GFS is in and it takes Joaquin out to sea with no landfall along the east coast. It also gives the NY metro area a mostly dry weekend(especially Sunday). It's solution is what we said would happen this morning. The Carolina's would still see 8-15 inches of rain as a separate front does battle there. Beach erosion and coastal flooding still possible in NJ and Long Island(if you live on the south shore you need to watch that closely as it could get bad for some).
The trend east continues as we suggested it would and now out to sea is becoming the much more favorable solution. Landfall along NC/VA coast is now less likely and landfall in NY metro was never an option in our view. The hype and comparisons some in the news media are making are crazy. Too much model casting going on. Some need to go back to good ole fashion forecasting and not model hug. Can it change? Sure but right now the trend is our friend.

I dont get nervous about this crap ever... even with Sandy -- Til we got 3 feet of water in our house... Now I see a dark cloud and I get knots in my stomach. If we get hit again I may seriously commit myself. We are still struggling from Sandy... I will NOT be able to handle another hit. Chat Icon

I feel like unless people actually went through the hell that was Sandy they won't understand how scary this is. We have a 21 month old and a baby due in 6 weeks. I totally can not handle a flooded house and months without power or heat while I wait for FEMA to get off their ass and cut me a check to replace my furnace even though we pay $4000 a year for flood insurance! I wish it was as easy a picking up a 6 pack and drinking my cares away but for some the idea of a hurricane is the stuff nightmares are made of. Some people may say thats the price you pay for living by the water but when I bought my house it had never flooded before. Not during Irene or even Gloria. Sandy has just left us all so scarred I think. Chat Icon

I had a 9 month old at the time... Insurance gave us crap.. It was a joke..23$ to replace ceramic tile in my kitchen for example.. but whatever.. Took me 9 months of living in a bedroom at my inlaws house to get back home.... and I still have anxiety from it

I don't think anyone is downplaying the potential for concern considering most people on LI were affected by Sandy in some way - i think all anyone (like myself) is saying is that it is too early to accurately predict what this storm will do, and even if they do predict the hurricane making landfall.. we still do not know how bad it will be until it is actually here. The track of the storm changes daily. So being prepared is great.. but that's all anyone can do. Getting anxious or nervous isn't going to make a storm stay away.. so try and save yourself the worry and just have a plan incase you need it.

Yeah, A plan is great... but until you literally lose everything you own and you are homeless you dont get it. If one more person told me "its just stuff, you can replace it" or "Your house will be brand new and beautiful arent you so excited??" I would punch them in the face. Yeah its just my stuff...my memories.. my life.. things I worked hard to get .. MY house was brand new when I walked in sure, but my house was fine before. I didnt want to spend money on that.. I just dont think people understand the emotional affect it had on people.. Yes was everyone affected, sure... but theres a difference between someone who had no power for 2 weeks, and couldnt take a hot shower and had to throw out the contents of their freezer To the person who lost everything they owned and became homeless and uncertain that they could ever afford to be home again.

You could not have said this better! AND I really think that people need to relax over the idea of people running to the store to buy "milk, eggs and bread" being crazy or ridiculous...if you don't want to do that then don't, but if it makes someone feel a little bit better to be prepared then that's their business.

We live by the water in Lindenhurst...I am praying this is not like Sandy. If it is I am packing up my life and moving to Montana!!

We are one town over by the water and were affected by Sandy.

I've had major anxiety since last night, primarily due to what everyone is posting.

As a positive, I work for the largest health and hospital system for the area, and have not gotten any alerts yet.

We usually do and they tend to be spot on if something big is goiing to hit.

I am planning to get a concrete truck this time around and fill in my basement if it's another Sandy!

I think it will all be ok. We will get up on Monday, have our morning cup of coffee and realize that it won't hit us.

Wow, are you really fuckingserious? I haven't checked this thread because it makes me anxious.

We could still have major flooding in my area even without a hurricane. I have no words except I hope you never get hit by a natural disaster.

I'm better today but I actually was having chest pains at a point yesterday and I suspect it was from anxiety about this storm.

I still have issues when I hear major wind or rain. I also agree 1000% that until you've been through water coming out of nowhere and neighbors huddled in your house because it's the highest, crying, and elderly being rescued in a canoe or bulldozer you will never get it.

But go make fun and buy your Slurpees and coffee and complain when 7-11 closes.

I agree. I was worried before Sandy and now even more after. We laid in a hallway during the storm, the only spot away from trees or large picture windows. We heard trees cracking and falling, thumping and it was pitch black outside (and inside). It was very scary. Then we woke up to see the storm continuing, trees down, trees crashed into neighboring houses, fearful to step outside in the storm to see what else was going on. Driveway blocked with trees, trees resting on trees, poles down, wires all over, and no heat or food other than dry goods for almost 2 weeks. Freezing, sitting in the dark, no way to heat even water for a cup of coffee or tea to warm up, taking ice cold showers, no gas so NO way to escape the cold or get a hot meal elsewhere. Trapped in our cul de sac for days until trees could be cleared and no where to walk to (unwalkable area). yeah, it was really bad and I don't look forward to something similar again. Could have been worse as my house was spared but it was scary.

I really don't understand what I said that was so bad. I think it will pass and not hit Long Island. I have followed the maps and trust the European Model. I know you get anxious about this, and I understand that. I don't and tried to pass my calm demeanor on to you.

Tropical Storm?

In my opinion, Sandy (and Irene) changed the structure of the tidal pools, inlets and bays. I think we are much more likely to be flooded, sorry. I see sooooo many houses for sale in my community that were flooded out, fixed up, and put up for sale. I'm guessing maybe these people believe it, too? They were once homes that sold for $800k to a million... Now, lucky if they can get $600. I think it's terrible

I don't know what you want me to "get." There was no harm meant in my initial comment about the storm. I didn't try to make anything about me, you singled me out after a simple thought I made. You FM'd me, calling me disgusting and brought it to the forum here. Enjoy your weekend and I hope everything works out for you, I wish no ill will towards you and your family. God Bless.

Honestly I don't understand why you think his comment was offensive. His comment made me feel better. He was just trying to say don't worry it will probably be nothing.

But go make fun and buy your Slurpees and coffee and complain when 7-11 closes.

I didn't make fun of anyone. I commented that I thought the storm would miss us, that is all. I really have no idea why you have such a stick up your ass about me.

And your follow up comment proves my point about the complete and utter disregard you have. Disgusting.

If you can't see how you comment can be taken the way it was, and continue to rudely make it about YOU....you will never "get it".....

Thank you to those of you who are compassionate.

Honestly I don't understand why you think his comment was offensive. His comment made me feel better. He was just trying to say don't worry it will probably be nothing.

Chat Icon

I'm pretty sure he didn't mean anything by it. Like he said- HE thinks it will pass us.
We were ALL affected by Sandy, some worse than others. He's seeing the "bright" side of things (kind of like all the blizzards we're supposed to get and they turn out to be nothing). Maybe his damage wasn't as severe as yours, but jumping down his throat saying YOU will never "get it" I think is a bit much. Cut the guy some slack.

I really think you're overreacting. What he said was not offensive or insensitive and least of all disgusting, Including his follow up comment.

I understand you're anxious and on edge, and clearly a bit of ptsd, but he didn't say anything wrong.
