True Side Impact Protection for Car Seats
Did you hear about this on the news today. That USA made car seats offer no side impact protection for your baby if you were in a car accident involving a side impact. That's not good

Re: True Side Impact Protection for Car Seats
Strangely enough, from what I have heard a lot of other countries have higher safety rated car seats for babies and children, and they do more rigorous testing. From what I understand, the US standards of testing are lower than other countries, although I have heard that this is on the up and about to change.

They suggest the European manufactures like Britax and I didn't' get the other company name.

Britax has been selling car seats in the USA for over 10 years...They even manufactuar (sp) them here too...they just started off in Europe..
Nobody says you have to buy the cheapest car seat

Apparently from what I have read the US made Britax seats didn't perform too well, but the EU ones, performed much better. Why the difference in design and safety for seats made by the same company?? I don't get it. I think the best seats (the ones mentioned probably) are Maxi Cosi (who have just come to the states) The safest one is called the Maxi Cosi Cabriofix (this one is gorgeous, I have never seen this colour in the shops. I had the Maxi Cosi Cabrio, but not the isofix one.
And the next level up one is called the Maxi Cosi Tobi, and I believe that one scored pretty high also. I have it and although it looks great, I really hate it.
I suspect this post will be moved to parenting soon...but I will be asleep by then.

Re: True Side Impact Protection for Car Seats
This is why we looked at the Recaro b.c. their seats do have true side impact protection - the britax boulevard I think does too.

Yes, the Boulevard does. I have a Boulevard, and a Britax Wizard (predecessor to the Boulevard). I bought them because the Wizard was the only car seat sold in the US with side-impact protection, and I liked them, so I bought the updated Britax Boulevard for my 2nd car seat.
Also, many of the EU car seats allow you to use the top tether when the seat is rear-facing. Most US car seats don't.
