Trying to help a family member - re: section 8 housing and public assistancr
In my research, it appears that the list for section 8 is closed and is behind. They are currently backed up since 2003!
What do you do if you live in Suffolk county, only receive $850.00 in social security? That's not enough for rent and food.
My family is trying to help someone within our family who is 77 years old and needs a place to live.
We are thinking of looking into a room for rent for her but, those are very hard to come by.
Anyone knowledgable with this? She is currently staying with another family member but, it's temporary.
Please help!

Trying to help a family member - re: section 8 housing and public assistancr
What about senior citizen government housing? A few family members of mine are in this, and they actually have nice apartments! I know Nassau county def has this program. Not sure if this is what you looked into already

Any advice is appreciated! Where do I call to get her in this type of program? I know my family wanted her in Suffolk so she could be closer to her other family members... But, any assistance will help!!!

Look at the towns in Suffolk too- my nana used to live in a senior apartment and I'm pretty sure it was run by the Town of Oyster Bay.

My DH's family is trying to get his grandmother into this since she is on a fixed income as well. From what I was told there is over a 2 year wait list!

my grandma in bklyn is currently on section 8 for her apt. she's 87. I think they closed the list back in 2009. She's been on it for a long time.
there has to be some sort of assisted living she can get into.
maybe contact the state department of aging?

Don't forget food stamps. Every little bit helps and with a Social Security amount that low the person should get some food assistance

If they are very frail or have a disability where they could potentially meet a nursing home level of care, I know of a program that offers housing location and a subsidy.

It is hard to get housing help on LI as most of the section 8 lists are closed and the waiting lists open so infrequently.
You can try Catholic Charities or call some of the subsidized apartment complexes directly but many have a 1-5 year waiting list. For a list, click here

This is the voucher program that my dad applied for 5 years ago. They figure he is about 1 year away from receiving the voucher as they have started to send him updates and ask him to confirm he still needs assistance.
These programs have a very long waiting list but it's worth a call to see what else may be available considering the strong economic need.
