Trying to Relax and Enjoy Pregnancy...needing hugs

I went to the doctor yesterday and I am up 20 lbs in 21 weeks. I had very little weight gain in the first trimester (2 or 3 pounds) and in the last 2 months, I am gaining like crazy. I am having the occassional treat, but nothing crazy. I'm going to the gym twice a week, walking on the treadmill for an hour (working FT, it's all I can manage right now).

My doctor told me I am fine, and that I shouldn't worry at all...that the second trimester is a time of weight gain because the baby and placenta are growing rapidly. She told me I look great, and a lot of people at work tell me the same thing. I don't really look like I've gained 20 lbs, just some weight.

I am thrilled to be PG and feel so lucky to be...but I'm finding it hard to relax and enjoy it because I am afraid of becoming HUGE...how do you ignore the numbers and just relax? I want to enjoy being PG and not feel badly about eating treats once in a while...

Re: Trying to Relax and Enjoy Pregnancy...needing hugs

I really try to look at it as the one time where people expect me to "grow" so why not enjoy it with some extra indulgences. My first pregnancy I only gained 23 lbs but this pregnancy at 15 weeks I am already up 12 lbs. I'm sure I will be meeting or exceeding your weight gain at 21 weeks. I am fine with it b/c I've made a commitment to lose the weight after baby comes. I just want to have a healthy baby and I want to enjoy the pregnancy---not worry about ##'s.

Re: Trying to Relax and Enjoy Pregnancy...needing hugs

I have my 16 week appointment today and while I dont look like I have gained too much weight, my home scale says otherwise.. and I am worried what the doctor is going to say!!! Im hoping to keep it under 10 lbs.. we shall see... I understand how you feel, and before I got preggo I had lost 45 lbs.. it took 2 years to take it off, and it has me really scared about getting huge.. I totally understand.. but DH tells me that I have to gain weight for the baby... and even though I have gained so much.. my tops still fit, its just the pants that dont.. so maybe im not doing too bad.. I dont know.. i am going to say my baby weighs the 10 lbs Ive gained..

My SIL took spin classes regularly until she was in her 35th week. She STILL gained almost 60 pounds. By 5 months post pardem, she had lost ALL the weight and then some.

Moral: Your body is going to gain what it needs to gain.

Re: Trying to Relax and Enjoy Pregnancy...needing hugs

Don't worry about it. With both of my pregnancies, I gained the least amount of weight in my last trimester--and I was sooo nervous.

With my first, in the first 2 trimesters, I gained 21 lbs---then gained 8 in the last.

With this one, I think I gained 21-22 in the first two trimesters, and have gained 3-4 in the last--I have 2 weeks to go.

maybe it's just me but i found that weighing myself each day helped ease the "blow" of finding out how much i gained from month to month. hope you feel much better! Chat Icon

Re: Trying to Relax and Enjoy Pregnancy...needing hugs

I am in the same boat. I am 24 weeks tomorrow and up about 26-27 lbs.

I started off thin, so the dr said this extra weight was necessary.

It is a bit frustrating to me but what can you do? I am hungry, so i have to eat. I am not going to deprive my child.

The weight will come off. I will be like a mad man after the baby comes to get rid of it.

I commend you for doing so much exercise, I have not been half as good as you in that department.

Just try to be as healthy as possible- and enjoy that treat - it is good for u and your baby!

All you can control is what you're eating - So, if you know you're eating failry healthy w/ the ocassional, normal, pregnant woman's Friendly's sundae Chat Icon your body is just going to store what it needs for the baby ........

You will lose it !!

ETA: I'm also paraniod and weight myself once a week - I couldn't bare every day, I'd make myself crazy -

So far at 16w I haven't gained yet, BUT I started this pregnancy off overweight AND I haven't had much of an appetite - I'm assuming that's going to change at some point !!

Thank you all so much. I am going to try and remember that it's all for the health of my baby.

I am a 10 year Weight Watchers veteran who can't seem to relax. It probably didn't help that DH was in the room when my weight was entered into the laptop (doesn't anyone use charts anymore?) and I now outweigh him. Men s#ck.

i am so torn on this topic it's very hard for me to relax...

i'm MORE than 'slightly overweight'....so how much weight am i supposed to gain? The RE hasn't said a word to me, however, they aren't weighing me, they simply take my blood and do an u/s.

it makes me sad that i'll never take 'belly' pics - because i already have a belly...but there's not much i can do about that.

I have ibs-d and because of the 'spotty eating habits (if i have a meeting, that means no lunch, if we're going to NY to see my parents, i can't eat before we leave, etc..), my metabolism has almost completely stopped.

Sorry for the pity party - but i'm with you....your body will take what it needs and do what it needs with it! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't really think there's a right or wrong for this - Unless you're gaining 50 lbs a tirmester !! - LOL
........I think it's different for everyone. - My Dr. told me the healthy weight gain is 25-35 lbs and I Chat Icon and said "EVEN though I'm already about 40 lbs over where I'm comfortable?" - He said he'd let me know if I was "getting out of control" - So my paranoia is ME putting it on myself b/c I am afraid I will just be miserable and horribly uncomfortable and have a hard time breathing (I have asthma already) if I gain too much .......HE didn't seem concerned -

If it's all in yoru belly, maybe you're just showing ? I'm not yet, Some days I look exactly the same, and others I look a little bloated, but that's it -

ETA : I walk to and from the train station - my house, and to and from Penn - the office .......I also walk around the city during lunch sometimes if it's nice outside -
I have been too tired for the gym though -

Re: Trying to Relax and Enjoy Pregnancy...needing hugs

I know how you feel. I am still struggling with the weight gain aspect of pregnancy. It is so hard to just reprogram what has been drilled into our heads our entire lives, and be ok with the weight gain-- even though we *know* it's for the baby.

I just try to not get TOO hung up on the numbers, although I can't really avoid feeling something. And now that my belly is starting to show more-- I am more ok with how my body looks at almost 27 weeks, than it did at 20 weeks. It's weird. I guess I look more pregnant, and less like I just put on a few.

Oh that's IT! It's the worst feeling. DH and I are neck and neck and it's killing me! I honestly don't care about how much I've gained or how I look (anymore) but it is eating me alive to know that I probably weight more than DH at this point! I look at it as you are doing this for your baby and in order for your baby to grow you need to grow also.. I wouldnt worry about it.. As long as your doctor is telling you your okay then i would let it be... you are pregnant and you are going to grow... try not to let it bother you..

Re: Trying to Relax and Enjoy Pregnancy...needing hugs

You're going to gain what your body needs to gain. You can eat healthy and exercise and still gain 50 lbs. Everyone reacts differently to pregnancy. I wouldn't worry about what others gain or even what the average weight gain is. If your doctor doesn't say anything, I wouldn't be concerned.
