Trying to understand inductions
And I just did a search and read alot of previous induction stories. My question is this - why do some doctors put in the cervadil first, and some go straight for the pitocin?
What is the difference between the two? Does one do something that the other doesn't? Sorry to sound so naive but I also searched it online and couldn't find any good answers.
I could possibly be induced tomorrow night so I am just trying to know as much as I possibly can before then.
Thanks!

Re: Trying to understand inductions
The cervadil is to soften your cervix and the pitocin is to start the contractions. In my case, the cervadil through me right into labor.
Good luck tomorrow!!!!

Re: Trying to understand inductions
They probably won't use cervadil if your cervix made a lot of progress already.
I was 80% effaced and 3cm dilated when I was induced. They didn't use cervadil. I just had pitocin to help get my contractions going.
ETS: Good luck!!

Thanks! As of last Wednesday I was only a fingertip dilated. Two weeks ago I was 70% effaced (didn't find out what I was last week)
The reason for the possible induction is that the fluid is low (I will be 41 weeks on Saturday)

Re: Trying to understand inductions
The way I understnad, the cervadil gets your cervix READY for the induction.....if you are somewhat dialated and almost 100% effaced, the cervadil may put you into labor...it did not for me, the pitocin was needed to get my contractions started...good luck, I had a great induction experience (I did wind up with a c-section)

Re: Trying to understand inductions
I had cervadil because my cervix had made no progress at all. It took me about 4-5 hours to really get started with the labor but once it started it came on full force. The dose was supposed to take 12 hours then after I was to have pitocin. But the Cervadil put me into labor and my entire labor took 13 hours start to finish.

I was given the cervadil 1st bc he wanted me to dilate more so he could break my water, so he didn't have to do a full induction. Turns out I was having contractions on my own but not dilating. I had an epidural before the pitocin bc of this but I guess maybe bc the epidural was given so early I was having areas that weren't as numb as others. Because of that I was KNOCKED out for my c-section which sucked in a way. Don't worry about it though...it honestly wasn't so bad, the part about being induced..the contractions..those were bad lol.

OMG...tomorrow is the day? Can't wait to meet your little one.
I had an induction and had both cervadil and pitocin but I was only a fingertip dilated. I had a great experience...Lots of luck

Re: Trying to understand inductions
They dont go straight to pitocin unless the cervadil does its job. I did cervadil 2 times - 20 hours later they decided not to do pitocin b/c the cerv did nothing. I had a csection....

Re: Trying to understand inductions
I only had the pitocin because I was dilating and my water broke, but I waasn't having contractions. The pitocin helped that out A LOT! And after the contractions started, the labor went really quickly.
