Trying with new job...

Would you try now if you just started your new job? Its a transfer within the same company (so benefits and all are there) but I guess its more of a moral question.

I'd hate to push because of circumstances.Chat Icon Something may always come up to delay?

Re: Trying with new job...

Honestly-- with each day that passes, my baby itch increases, but I *personally* have always thought it's unprofessional to try while in a new job. It really depends on how career oriented you are and how family friendly your company is.

My personal opinion is that you will typically want flexibility- while pg or after the baby is born, and you need to prove your worth in order to have people accomodate you and do what they can to make you happy-- so you don't look elsewhere.

I have been at my job 6 months and if I was there much longer-- I may consider trying sooner than I anticipated-- but also things have recently happened there and am not sure what will happen in the next 6 months-- BUT if it gets to be like I am always pushing off for something-- then eventually I will just have to go fot it-- but, at this time I am not prepared to.

It's really a personal decision based on career goals and flexibility of your job.

Re: Trying with new job...

My answer is yes. We are having issues ttc, so I'm not waiting a minute longer to do something about it, new job or not.

If they don't understand, (possible time off, possibly coming in late), then I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

The nice thing with this job is that its a 'work from home' job. I will be working out of my home office - thus- ofcourse it comes with an UNBELIEVEABLE flexibility. I am VERY career oriented, which is why I am concerned with telling them I am PG 3 months after starting - though as I said, flexibility would not be an issue.

Also, my manager and many teammates are women, wouldn't they understand?

I think we are now delaying till April, do you guys think thats OK? should it be more?

That is what I am afraid of, and that is why I do not want to delay for long!!!!!! I guess 3 months in the long scheme of things is OKChat Icon

Re: Trying with new job...

I am startng a new job in a month too. ANd we are going to wait three months to start ttc. I know it might be unprofessionial but we have waited so long to ttc i can't wait any longer. My DH switched jbs and we lost health insurance so now i will have it through my new job. Like my DH says they don't need to know we were actually trying maybe it just happened by accident. Plus we are almost thirty and we don't want to wait any longer.

Re: Trying with new job...

the sad thing really is, is that this is a concern for women. If any of you caught 20/20 a couple weeks ago-- they did this whole thing on working women, and how corporate america does not support moms who work for them, although they make up over 70% of the US work force.

The fact that we need to worry about how professional we look because we want to do somehting that is more natural than sitting at a desk for 9+ hours staring at a computer screen is really obsurd-- as much as I am guilty of playing into it. Really makes me angry-- yes, we want to be treated equally-- which cannot really happen since men don't bear children, but we should be at least treated with equal respect.

I hope more politicians in '08 make working moms and working women in general part of their platform-- countries that we are at war with, fighting for freedom, supports their working moms more than the US does.

ETA-- here is the link to the 20/20 story if anyone is interested

I think you bring up a really good point. MMen don't even have to take this into consideration - since at most they take off is 2 weeks after. Its a normal process, and yet we have to calculate when we can/can't based on new jobs. Hopefully 4 months wait is 'professional' enough.

My company was actually profiled on that program as one that is good to working moms. I'm lucky... and I am really hopeful that individuals I work with will understand - all of whom have toddlers themselves.

I'm in the same boat. If it weren't for my starting a new job (on Monday!), we'd prob start trying now. But, bc I want to be settled there first, we are going to wait until the spring. I don't want to wait too long and regret it though.

Re: Trying with new job...

Im in this boat too.. Im a teacher and am forever having the
"Should I wait till tenure" debate with myself. I KNOW it is ridiculous to put your life on gold bc of a job, but it is just SO looked down upon that I would be afraid of losing this job and having to find another one while pregnant or with an infant... neither good highlights to put on a resume unfortunately.

Re: Trying with new job...

I started a new job in September and actually was a few days pregnant when I began. Clearly my choice. In my opinion, this was the time to get pregnant and I was not about to let the new job interfere with that priority. The way I looked at it was that family comes first. Under the law I am protected and I plan not to take unpaid leave so I don't worry about FMLA issues. It is what it is. If they can't accept it then we'll deal with it. In the meanwhile I have pushed myself harder than ever before...never missing a day of work no matter how bad I have felt, meeting all my deadlines and working late whenever it was required without even a comment.
