Turning heat on?
So, due to oil costs, etc, DH and I want to wait until as long as possible before turning the heat on.
Currently, our house thermostats in the morning say 62, mid afternoon 64, evening back down to 62.
When does it become dangerous to not have the heat on and pipes can freeze cause we want to avoid that!
TIA!
And yes, I know this is something I should know, but I don't.

Re: Turning heat on?
I guess when the outside temps dip below 32 degrees?? I don't know.
I have been so tempted to turn on that heat but DH would be soooo mad

Re: Turning heat on?
It's 65 in here and I'm not turning it on yet! I'm just getting over the high electric bills from the a/c, I don't want to dive into high gas bills yet.

I would say you need continuous sub 30 degree weather days for this to happen.

Re: Turning heat on?
I am going to try to hold off until November before turning the heat on. DH and I will sit with a blanket on the couch at night. I refuse to turn it on just yet especially with the oil prices the way they are!

Re: Turning heat on?
FIL tells us in the winter to keep the heat at a minimum of 55 when we arent home.
I would guess it would have to be frosty outside to freeze your pipes, you are probably good until november.

Re: Turning heat on?
I turned mine on this morning to take the chill out of the air. It was 62 in here and I don't want the kids too cold. I will shut it off though and not turn it back on till tomorrow morning.

Re: Turning heat on?
We will be waiting as long as possible to turn our heat on - We're shooting for the beginning of November-ish. Until then, we will be loading up on the blankets
Sucks that it has to be this way

Re: Turning heat on?
I had to turn mine on today, since we have a 4 month old and he has a cold. The temp was in the mid-60s upstairs bu the bedrooms but 72 on the main area. If it was just me and DH I would have left it off as long as possible!

Re: Turning heat on?
So far the coldest my house has been is 68 degrees.
I was at my sisters and it was 60 and i was so cold, she has an older house and also still has a bunch of A/C units in the windows.
When my house gets down to 64 degrees thats when we wil turn it on.
My house is new and it keeps the heat in very well. Its also insulated like crazy

Re: Turning heat on?
I put it on yesterday just to take the chill out of the air since Ava's not feeling well, but I shut it right off again. I'm going to try to wait until November to really keep it on.

Re: Turning heat on?
We turned ours on Friday morning because our house was 59 degrees when we woke up.
We've left it on and set the thermostat at 64 and it has only gone on twice since then. I"m sure it will go on tonight though since they are talking about frost.

Re: Turning heat on?
Our house has not dipped below 65 & that is early in the am. Since we are not home during the day & it is only the two of us, we don't mind it. Until the house is below 62 on a constant basis, we will not turn the heat on. We have sun all day, so the house will be about 73 when I get home....
we are hoping to not turn the heat on til November....

Re: Turning heat on?
I'm glad someone started this thread b/c I was wondering the same thing. We are first time home owners and are clueless as to when people put their heat on. My sister has 2 kids and just put hers on the other night. I'm cold more during the day, but I'm bundled up at night. I don't even know if we have to do something special before we turn the heat on. We have gas. My MIL has a rule of Oct 15th!!

Re: Turning heat on?
I have been wondering the same thing. I have been so cold in our house. The thermostat reads in the low-mid 60s when I get up. We are resisting turning on the heat as long as possible. I've been wearing warm sweats, and sleeping under several blankets!
