T.V Watching. At what age?

Hi,

At what age did you allow your child to start watching T.V?

What did the watch?

For how long?

TIA

Re: T.V Watching. At what age?

I don't think we started until around 4 months and I would let her watch one baby einstein and even then not every day. I pretty much used it if I had to get something done.
Now she rarely watches them and I rarely have the TV on. I personally believe in the whole ADD and TV connection and DH and I plan to really limit TV watching as she grows up and encourage her to do other things and be active.
On the days that we are home I put the TV on first thing in the morning to hear the weather and then it is off the rest of the day until DH gets home

Re: T.V Watching. At what age?

I like watching T.V myself and will usually have it on when I am at home but always have my DD facing away from it. she is only 12 weeks so its easy for me to do this now. I am worried that a) she will get addicted to it and will want to watch it all the time, b) that its bad for her eyes and c) that there is an ADD connection.

My friends child has been watching T.V since birth and watches a lot of T.V and is the craziest kid I have ever met, she is so hyper and doesnt know what to do with herself when she is away from her home and not near a T.V....she could just be a hyper child but I always wonder about the T.V connection.

I was just interested to hear everyones views on here. I know its hard to get anything done and you do what you have to do...I am hoping to be able to ride this one out and not give in...but I dont know how long I can fight it!

It will get harder to keep her turned away. I have pretty much given up watching TV until she goes to bed. I figure my time can be better spent doing other things anyway.
At 7 months old Miranda will watch anything we have on TV. DH thinks she likes American Idol so she watches that with him on Tuesday nights Chat Icon He says she likes the light.
This morning I had the news on and I was trying to get her to say goodbye to DH and she kept moving her head all over the place just to watch the TV. As soon as I saw the weather off it went.

Re: T.V Watching. At what age?

My son Michael is 8.5 months
and the only TV he watches is if I am watching TV and usually then I have him turned around or he is nursing.

In the daytime I try to turn the TV off and have gotten much better at it,
WE have not put any childrens shows or DVDs on for Michael and do not plan to for a long while, or as long as we can possible do it, I know it will be hard.

While I am watching and he is in the room he will stare of course for awhile, but then usually finds something more interesting, thank goodness.

but like I said I have to try to keep the tv off in the house more,
and I most say I have gotten better.
I put on Music CDs instead.

good luck.

Jacob has been watching it since i would say 3 months.. he is 4.5 months now.. i just let him watch it in the morn.. for an hour or two.. until his first nap. He watches Noggin. After that first nap, we are out busy doing things, or he is playing in his exersaucer. Or we are at my MIL's house and he NEVER watches tv there..

I am not a big TV watcher.. i only watch tv when he goes to bed at night.

I don't want to sound mean but do you personally know someone with ADD? I just ask because my dd has ADHD and I do NOT contribute it to watching TV. My son is 2 1/2 and also watches TV and does not have ADD or ADHD. He might be young but you know as they get older and he has no similarities to his sister. He can sit alot stiller for a longer time than her.
I don't believe all the hype about TV being bad and "causing" ADD and ADHD. It think they don't totally know, besides being genetic, and want to blame it on something.
My dh and I personally always watched TV as kids and we don't have ADD or ADHD. I work out of the home so during the day the kids watch no TV so I think it is ok at night and during the weekends and they don't spend all their time watching it. Especially when it gets warmer out, we spend days outside.

Re: T.V Watching. At what age?

Since birth I always have the TV on and my DD would sit with me when she was awake or if we were playing it would be on. Also I would put her in front of the TV when I had to shower or getthings done around the house. She is 20 months old and is not addicted to it she will watch it but then there are times she will play with her toys and she doesn't want any part of the TV

At 1 year Alex has only a slight interest in TV. He does not like Baby Einstein. So far he will watch about 3 - 5 minutes of Seasame Street/Teletubbies and be on to the next thing. I figure when he is older he will watch some more and then I will limit it to 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening.

I am in the medical field so I see a lot of children with ADD/ADHD and I have also had people close to me with it. I don't think it is the cause 100% of it but I feel that it can a contributing factor of sorts. I am not talking about an hour or two of TV a day. I don't think it's practical to try to have no TV at all.
I know someone who literally had the TV on for their child ALL and I mean ALL day and as he grew up he was eventually diagnosed. Maybe one had nothing to do with the other but maybe it did. That is the kind of TV watching I am talking about. Overall I just feel TV isn't something I want my daughter to be that into but that's just me and I have other reasons other than the whole ADD thing.

I didn't want to sound mean but it is just that I have gone through her ADHD since she was about 3. I understand the logic but I really think it is genetic and sometimes food additives.
I don't like the kids watching all day either and iit usually only like that when the weather is bad and we can't get out of the house. The are only watching disney channel, nick and noggin so at least they are watching shows that they are learning things about.

I personally believe that if children watch a certain amount of TV that it can lead to ADD. Our neighbors would basically ignore their daughter, fence her into the living room, and leave the TV on for her ALL day. She was diagnosed with ADD and has to go to a special school now. Like I said, it's more likely a more extreme amount of television-watching that leads to it, but it can definitely be a cause.

Hazel-
I didn't feel you were being mean and by no means did I want to imply that any TV at all makes someone have ADHD. I also don't think that's the only cause. I agree with you that some of it is probably genetic and food related. I think we as humans are much more sensitive to foods (especially processed crap) than we realize.
I was thinking more along the lines of what Kristin was saying. Those parents that basically plop their kid in front of the TV for most of their waking day. I really believe that can lead to some kind of attention disorder.
Today was one of those days for us that I just needed some down time so I put her in front of the TV but that only lasted 15 minutes anyway. I agree that the days spent entirely at home are the hardest.

I agree. Sometimes I feel guilty that they are watching too much TV but I know it is not everyday. My son NEVER watches TV at daycare and if it is raining, they will watch a movie. It is usually something he would see at home anyway. My dd is at school 6 hrs and then at after-care so she doesn't see any TV until at least 6pm and then goes to bed at 8:30 so she barely sees much at night. I can't stand listening to the TV after awhile so I do turn it off often!
