Two year old starting daycare/school tuesday--tips

So DS who is 27 months is starting daycare/school three days a week on tuesday from 7:30-3:15. I was home with him the first year and then he has been watched by family.

We have been preparing him by explaining he is going to school, telling him what he will be doing there, buying a lunch box etc.

We are so nervous to leave him, he loves activities so I know he will enjoy that part but he can be very scared around people he does not know...

Basically I guess I am asking for tips on how to make his transition easier--how long does it take for a toddler who is weary of strangers to get comfortable in a day care setting?

Any advice or experience would help this worried mama a lot Chat Icon

Honestly the school will help. IMO do not make a long drawn out goodbye. He will probably cry but chances are will stop within minutes. My ds has been going since 8 weeks and still cries some days.

I agree with a PP, make the goodbye quick. My DS cried his first day- he was 2 yrs 5 months- but the teachers told me it was very quick. Another tip his teachers gave me- don't sneak out. Even though it is tempting to sneak out while the teacher has your child engaged, it is better to say goodbye and give a kiss & a hug. Good luck, he will love it!

ETA: We taped a picture of our family in his cubby, which helped. He has been in daycare for almost 3 months, and he still goes over there once a day and kisses our picture, according to his teachers. A lovey for naptime helped our DS as well.

No tips, but my 27 month old is starting school Tuesday too! He's been with a babysitter most days since 6 months, but will now be going to pre-nursery school from 9-12 two days a week.
Good luck!

It will be fine.
If the separation is really hard, try a separation class.
DS was 3 when he started and cried when I went to pick him up!

I also agree with this. Make the goodbye quick. They will cry but it usually isn't for long afterward.

Good luck!! It's not as hard as it may seem. He may grow to really enjoy daycare. M loves daycare and often asks to go there. Some days when I pick her up, she doesn't even want to leave!!

DD started school in late November, and the first week was hard. Now loves it. Good luck :)
