tying shoelaces ....

at what age was your child able to tie their shoes? DS is entering first grade in the fall and he is 6 and I admit that he can't tie shoes yet Chat Icon I promised myself that I would teach him before going back to school in Sept. but he's having a hard time with it and is getting frustrated.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I am teaching him the old loop-wrap-around-loop way, NOT the way where you make two bunny ears and tie them. I guess I could show him that way, but I feel like it's not the right way since I wasn't taught that way!

Re: tying shoelaces ....

DS is seven and going into second grade and doesn't know how to tie his shoes yet either. I tried to teach him a few times but he hasn't been able to get it, and I end up buying Velcro sneakers because I know I won't have the time/patience in the morning to tie them for him. I keep saying I'm going to buy a pair of cheap tie on shoes so he can practice, but haven't done it yet - bad mom!Chat Icon

My DS is 4. I bought him sneakers with shoelaces, and naively said to myself "I'll just teach him to tie his shoes!!" Let's just say I can't wait for these sneakers to wear out so I can replace them with Velcro ones. I really don't see him mastering this any time soon.

Re: tying shoelaces ....

Nate is 5 and going to kindergarten in the Sept... He knows how to tie his shoes using the bunny ears method. It's not always perfect, but when he takes his time and doesn't get frustrated it comes out pretty good.

Thanks for reminding me - that is one of the things on our summer list. I have to get those trac shoes out and let him practice. DS will be 7 in a few weeks.

I teach first grade and I would say that 3/4 of my kids can't tie their shoes. They try often, though! Chat Icon
By the end of the year, more are able to, but not always with a "solid tie".

How about the fact that I don't think either of my children have ever even WORN shoes with laces? So, needless to say...my DD will be 5 in about 6 weeks and doesn't tie shoes!

Re: tying shoelaces ....

I'm a pediatric occupational therapist and I work on shoe tying all the time. Most kids can tying shoes during 1st grade, however I'm finding it more common for them to learn in 2nd. The way I teach it is the traditional "loop around" method, I get 2 contrasting colored pipecleaners, twist them together at one end then tape it to a table at the middle/twisted portion. I start step by step, breaking it down into small parts. I demonstrate the first part a few times then have the child try. The benefit of using pipecleaners is that it stays in place. It allows the child to focus less on keeping the laces in place and more on the motor plan of tying. Once a child can make the knot and the bow, he/she needs to practice daily on his/her shoes. It's best if they dont wear velcro shoes because wearing laces forces them to practice.

I don't like the bunny ear way. I taught L. to same as you are A. She gets the concept, does it, but it's not perfect. KWIM. I also don't do it with her everyday. I will though because I'm not doing it in the mornings when we are rushing out the door.

Mine both learned before they went to kindergarten however having worked in a second grade classroom, I can tell you that there are MANY second graders that can't tie yet.

Re: tying shoelaces ....

DS can sort of do it now (he is 7 going into 3rd grade) but it comes apart quickly. We are still trying to teach him.

I am trying to avoid the bunny ear way since I tend to believe that it doesn't hold the knot together as well as the loop over way does.

Thank you! I will definitely try this for practice!

In the mean time, he's free and clear this summer because he wears Lands End trekker shoes that don't tie and/or crocs and flip flops!

Re: tying shoelaces ....

One day I sat down with Emily and a shoe- it is easier for them to learn while NOT wearing the shoe. I also found that she did better learning the traditional loop around way as opposed to the bunny ears. She was about 5 1/2 when she learned.

Re: tying shoelaces ....

DD started at 3, but that was all on her own. We showed her the bunny ear method and she sat there with the shoe in front of her until she got it (she is stubborn that way :) )
She had been doing it like that until last summer she started tying the other way. She was definetly early, I know last year in K she was tying the shoes for a lot of the other kids. I would think 1st or 2nd grade to be the norm

I'm 41 and i still do loop over loop instead of the 'traditional' way. Noah is going to be 7 on Sunday and still asks for help!

I thought loop over loop was the traditional way Chat Icon (bunny ears NOT being the traditional way, but maybe I am just old-fashioned!)

Re: tying shoelaces ....

Do kids today even need to know this? Obviously it's a good skill to have but it seems like you can pretty much get through a lifetime of shoes without ever having to tie one. My almost 8 year old doesn't know how and I keep saying I'm going to get him a pair with laces but the idea of waiting for him in the AM while he ties his laces always brings me back to the velcro section at the shoe store.

Re: tying shoelaces ....

I should add- in her kindergarten class they had "shoe buddies" - the kids who knew how to tie shoes. They tied the other kids' shoes for them and it was good peer pressure to get your name up on the board as a "shoe buddy". That was the incentive behind Emily wanting to learn.

I think we are thinking the same thing I just don't know what to call it. I make 2 loops and just tie them in a normal slip not. I do not make a single loop, bring the lace around it and up through the base. I just can't do that without having one lace too long!!!Chat Icon
