Tylenol or Antibiotic for cold.

So my little one has the cold and a chesty cough. I took her to the doc yesterday as I didnt want it to develop into anything worse. The doc said its only a cold and gave me a prescription for Atarax and said to get it filled if DD was not sleeping at night.

So last night she woke several times...I think because of her cough and stuffy nose. Today her nose is running and she is just not her usual chirpy self.

Would you get the prescrip filled and give it to her or do you think I could give her tylenol for today to see if it improves.

Does anyone know the correct dosage for tylenol for a 10 1/2 mth old - she weighs 18.6 lbs. I dont know if its .4 or .8.

Thanks

Re: Tylenol or Antibiotic for cold.

tylenol is for pain, i wouldnt give it for a cold. What about Pedicare or Triminic?

For the congestion you could sit in a steamy bathroom and let her breathe it in.

Oh and my chart says that 18-23lbs get 1.2

Shows you how much I know!! The only medicine in the cabinet for my DD is tylenol...we havent needed to use anything up to this point except tylenol when she had her shots.

Is pedicare and triminic for infants?

I will try the steamy bathroom - thanks

Pedicare is for infants but I dont knwo the dosage. Triaminic is from 4 months up so for 12-17lbs is 1/4 tsp and 18-23lbs is 1/2 tsp.

Atarax is not an antibiotic. It is an antihistamine -- to dry up all the "juicy stuff".

The dose for Tylenol for a baby weighing 18.6lbs would be either 0.8ml or 1.2ml (you can give 10-15mg/kg). I would base the dose on how uncomfortable the baby is. Since regular Tylenol doesn't really help with a cold though, you could use it if you think the baby is uncomfortable/achy.

This is the Pediacare I would recommend for you. You can give your baby 0.8ml every 6 hours.

Pediacare

If you can't find this in the store (because of the Sudafed in it), ask at the Pharmacy counter. If possible, a regular decongestant (instead of the one with the "cough") I think would be better. I just don't know if it is available right now since they are reformulating many products. If you can find just the decongestant, ask the pharmacist about the dosage since it will be a new product and I can't find the dosing for it right now.
