Typical length of breastfeeding session

Just wondering how long your DC usually breastfeed for each time. My 3 month old DD only tends to eat for like 10 minutes on just one side. I am concerned that maybe she isn't getting enough.

every baby is totally different - and as they get older, that 10 minutes will be even less....as long as they are content, I am sure they are getting enough! DD is 6 & 1/2 months old and typically will eat for about 6-7 mins on the first side and then another 4-5 mins on the 2nd side.

I agree, 10 min on one side should be fine, every child is different

Re: Typical length of breastfeeding session

Just wanted to make sure because I have also been having some issues lately that I am trying to figure out with her crying during some breastfeeding times, so I at least try to get her to the 10 minute mark to feel like she is getting enough. I just get nervous when I see post about bottles and babies drinking 5-8 ounces at 3 months, and wondering if she is really getting this much in the 10 minutes.

It's funny b/c I'm noticing the opposite. DS used to nurse 5-10 minutes on e/ side & now that he's 5 months, its more like 20 minutes on e/ side.

Like they said, every baby is different

Re: Typical length of breastfeeding session

My DS was a super slow eater, still is at 3. He would nurse for atleast 25 minutes sometime sup to 40 minutes. I would switch breasts after about 15 minutes

DS is going to be 9 months in a few days and his sessions now are very short. 5 minutes on each side.

Re: Typical length of breastfeeding session

I've found they are shorter & shorter as they get older. DS went from like 30 minutes on each side as a newborn down to about 10 minutes or so by 3 months & now at 6 months when I can get him to stay still for more than 5 minutes at a time it's a good day.

Re: Typical length of breastfeeding session

Chloe is 8 months now, but at around 3 months we went through a few weeks of her crying and screaming after 1 or 2 min. I would try to get her to do 5 min on each side. Ped said it was probably just a phase that she was going through.. let down to fast/slow, gas, reflux, overtired... the phase quickly passed and she totally stopped crying at a feeding.

Try not to stress... babies are very efficient and as long as they are gaining weight and having enough pee/poop diapers, im sure they are fine Chat Icon

Im still EBF at 8 months and im so glad that those two weeks of craziness didn't drive me too nuts! I was getting so frustrated, but looking back on it, I wish I didn't stress as much.

Re: Typical length of breastfeeding session

I've always had a slow nurser. As a newborn, DS nursed for at least 45 minutes. Now, at 9.5 months old, he nurses for 20-25 minutes.
