UGH! Aren't Babies Supposed to Sleep More As They Get Older?!

Alex's sleep habits have gone down the tubes!!!Chat Icon
She used to go to bed @ 8:30pm, wake at 5:30 or 6:30am for a bottle & then snooze till 8-8:30am.
Fine, things change a bit, but now she's going down at the same time, waking at 3:30-4amChat Icon , won't go back down unless she's fed, and then is up with the sunrise!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
When does it start to stay darker in the morning so I can get some sleep????!!!
This child is also a cat napper during the day, so how is she getting enough sleep?
You think if I put her down earlier at night it will screw things up even more?
Man, and they say "it gets easier".Chat Icon

Roman's sleeping schedule is getting worse too. I say try putting her down earlier, try anything at this point!

I would agree that you should try an earlier bedtime, as they say, sleep begets sleep!!! Try around 6.30/7.00ish, at least try your routine earlier and see how that works....

Also, in our house the kid wakes up at around 5.30, but he isn't allowed to get out of his bed until sometime after six...no matter how much he moans, he stays in his crib until its at least six...unless he is hysterical of course..but it seems to be working really well for us!

definitely try the earlier bedtime. The whole sleep begets sleep thing is so true.

Also, in the AM, if Alyson wakes up early, I don't get her out till 7am. Once in a blue moon she's awake at 6:30 (like ths AM).

Is their a routine to her catnaps? Aly still goes down every 2 - 2 1/2 hours, sometimes she'll show her drowsy signs as early as 1 1/2 hours after waking up.

Thanks!
Yes, when she wakes early like this, I have her in bed with me & we DO NOT get out until my clock says 7:00am!!!Chat Icon
She used to be able to fall back asleep when she was "younger", but my trick doesn't work anymore.Chat Icon Chat Icon
During the day she usually takes 2 naps, and they are usually around the same time, I try to keep it structured.
When she has a cold last week she napped really well, much longer than usual, so that was nice, I hope it keeps up! We'll see...

Andrea,

I found at a certain point, taking DD into bed with me was more stimulating than calming. She absolutely will not sleep in our bed anymore. She often gets put down for her nap or bedtime awake in her crib and sometimes she has to cry a bit.

I don't know what's going on with Andrew anymore either. He goes down at 7pm but has been waking up around 5 - 5:30 am. He used to sleep until 7:30 ish.

Why don't u try black-out curtains to keep her room dark? She'll think it's still night time!

We are having the same issue with Bella, it is mostly because of teething I believe...

she was a 7-7 sleeper from 3 1/2 months and the month have been a total disaster...some mornings she is up at 5, 4:45, 6, every hour...you never know.

It's KILLING me...

Re: UGH! Aren't Babies Supposed to Sleep More As They Get Older?!

Mmmm... we went through a long phase with Alex where her sleep was totally off... now we seem to be back on schedule, but it happens... eventually it will pass and she'll get back on schedule. It could be a number of things - teething, a major developmental milestone, growth spurt, etc... at one point it became terrible, where Alex was waking every 2-3 hours, so I took her to the doc and discovered she had an ear infection, so if it gets REALLY bad, it's worth a visit to the pediatrician Chat Icon

is she doing anything different now - like standing in her crib or starting to cruise/walk? I noticed that the more mobile Talia got the less she wanted to sleep.

If you think the morning light is part of the problem buy blackout shades!!

Yes, it's been going on for a while, so has the sleep problem.Chat Icon
Great!!!Chat Icon
The light may be a little part of the problem, I'll have to try the shades, but honestly, by the time my DH finds the time to put them up, it will be dark in the a.m. anyway!!
Guess I'll need to do it myself.Chat Icon

Re: UGH! Aren't Babies Supposed to Sleep More As They Get Older?!

tonight is the 2nd night so far where her night sleep is TERRIBLE. Last night she was up every hour between 1-4 I think--I stopped looking. I finally gave her a bottle and that got her through till 7:45am.

I thought it was the broccoli she ate at lunch. Then I realized she was constipated.....she had a ginormous dirty diaper this AM and proceeded to nap for 3 HOURS.

Nap time is FINE.

Tonight so far....I've been in there 3 times (in an hour....) and tried gas drops and baby orajel. I rock her to sleep and put her down only to wonder how long till the next outburst.Chat Icon

She's normally the best sleeper....
