Ugh... The joys of homeownership

Does it ever feel like it's always "something" with your house? I swear!!! DH and I moved into our house in August, and it always seems like it's something. If it's not the toilet leaking, it's the sprinkler system not working, or a pipe breaking (with us it always seems like it's water related!)

Now, we moved into a pretty move in condition home, but it always feels like there's something wrong somewhere.

Saturday DH and I were out from early morning until the evening. We came home late Saturday night and I went down to the basement (it's finished, and this is where we spend the majority of our time) to see one entire side soaked with water (it's carpted). So we looked to see where the water was coming from, go into the utility room off the laundry room and find that our hot water heater is leaking up a storm. The water seeped under the wall and onto the carpet. We are having the new hot water heater ($1000+) intalled today. BUT now my carpet is ruined... we have an industrial strength wet/dry vac that we ran just about all day yesterday, it holds 16 gallons of water and we filled it TWICE yesterday. I'm afraid because it's the basement that we will need to rip up the carpet and either put new carpet down or just tile the basement. Which roally su cks because the basement is JUST a year old.

Just needed to vent... thanks!

Re: Ugh... The joys of homeownership

I feel your pain!!

We also moved into a move-in ready type of house, but less than 5 months later, we had an underground pipe leak under the floor, realized that we had a bunch of birds living in our soffits, part of our fence fell down and due to the high winds, parts of our gutters fall down from time to time.

The joys of homeownership!

Vent all you want! I'm sure there are others like us out there too with similar problems.

When things get rough, I just try to think how lucky we are to have such a nice house and you just have to take the good with the bad.

Good luck and keep your chin up!

Preaching to the choir..

aside from the cosmetic things we want to do there is always something that's breaking.

Sometimes I wish I rented..

i dont mean not to be thankful for my home- and i consider myself lucky that was able to afford something, but man, i wish i had my rent and landlord.....

now all the problesm fall into my hands and my pocket to fix

and i definitely think that owning a home can at times be over rated

Re: Ugh... The joys of homeownership

to answer your question - yes, there's always something! I bought a handyman special before I met DH, with the intention of going slowly through the renovations. Enter DH, and we sped through them much faster than I could have imagined. Now, five years later, we've still got more to do! It really never ends....but for us, it's somewhat enjoyable.

Plus, we have two other houses that we rent out - so if it's not our house, it's one of the tenants needing something. Chat Icon

And for investment purposes - home ownership is definitely worth it, IMO. I rented for too long, and it felt like I was just throwing money in the garbage every month.

Re: Ugh... The joys of homeownership

I am so thankful that we bought my parents house and they really took care of it. Through the years we had to replace things, but it was very well taken care of so many were just for cosmetic reasons.

Re: Ugh... The joys of homeownership

You might want to check with your insurance company as they might cover the damage. You have to weigh the cost of repairs and replacement vs. your deductible and filing a claim (depending upon your history, rates may go up). But it might be an option for you.
