ugh... the middle name thing....

poor Eryk.... no middle name. And we are REALLY REALLY trying.

it's traditional in my mother's family to have one name that is very very old and german/germanic. We just came back from visiting the relatives there. My aunt and uncle have very good knowledge of german history and mythology, and tossed about 3 dozen names our way. most of them are very unusual (not that we mind that... my middle name is literally medieval!) However, they simply don't translate well to english. ex: Alard we actually LIKE that name.... but in english, it doesn't take much imagination to make it 'A-lard' Chat Icon

so, we suggested Hermann (not too funky.... the german spelling of herman, and a name derived from germanic history) they CRINGED. Apparently, it's about as PC to name your child Hermann in germany as it is to name him Adolf Chat Icon While I would never name Scone Adolf, for OBVIOUS reasons, I really don't see why Hermann is so bad. they explained it was becuase the Nazi's encouraged naming children Hermann and other strong germanic names.

Sigh. How seriously should we take that? Obviously, we need to take German culture into account while selecting names. 1/2 my family is there, and Scone will be going both there and to poland with great regularity. However, many of the other old names are seriously odd, and were automatically on the 'no' list.

follow-up question: what do you think about Alard as a wierd middle name. It is a familial name from the late 17th century......

We were also thinking about Aleric.

I know, these names are SUPER different from the names most of you are considering, but this is our familial practice... I sort of like the idea of continuing it.... it keeps us close to our roots.

you're seriously a genius..... how on earth did you come up with another germanic name off the top of your head? I forgot about Konrad. They threw that name at me along with a slew of others, and frankly it was too much for me to write down....

yeah, we obviously don't want to select a name that could potentially have negative connotations Chat Icon.

I frankly didn't even think of how the first name sounded with the middle name Chat Icon yeah, we should definitely keep that in mind tooChat Icon

This might be too old school, but my GGF's name was Heinrich (form of Henry). Not sure if it would go with first name.

Just saw first name is Eryk.....Heinrich might be kinda funny with it!
