UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE!!! needed to vent...sorry!

I don't think the people upstairs have a CLUE how far they have pushed us over the edge.

The house we live in does not have dual heating. The thermostat is in our apartment which controls the whole house (supposedly) and we keep the heat between 70-74 which is comfortable/warm. Honestly, that's pushing it because it gets VERY warm in our apartment.

I told the 2 a-holes above us about their apartment being cold in the Winter because we lived in it when we first moved in. The landlord recenty replaced windows because they said they did not want to hear complaints about the heat. (All they want is their MONEY!!) Well..changing the windows did absolutely NOTHING and that's not my problem. I also told them they may need to put plastic over the windows or possibly get a space heater. Guess they didn't believe us.

So....last night..at 11:00pm...the a-hole from upstairs comes banging on our door. DD was asleep and she woke up because the dog started barking. I was LIVID!! My mom opened the door and he tells her "can you guys please put the heat on because we are cold". So my mother looks at him and says " Are you ***** kidding??? the heat is on" and closes the door. DH got so MAD as did I.

First of all..HOW DARE you come downstairs at 11pm and BANG on our door. If you were cold you should have realized it at 6pm when your arse got in!!!!!

Second - Did you forget WE ARE NOT THE LANDLORD??!!! You have issues with the heat, CALL THEM!!! We keep the heat at 72 and are not going to turn the heat up to 80 and BAKE in our apartment!!

Third - WE TOLD YOU it gets cold in your apartment. Also do you honestly think we are sitting in our apartment w/no heat on w/a baby here??? Are you stupid?

DH has been very calm about all of the crap we've been going through but last night was enough for him. He said he is going to tell them today it better be the LAST TIME they come down to our apartment and bang on our door or complain to us about the heat because we can't do anything about it. We are tenants just like them and do not own the damn house!! I'm hoping it doesn't get ugly..but if it does..so be it. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

A few more weeks of this crap...and we will be gone HOPEFULLY! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE!!!

Do they realize you keep the heat between 70 and 74 ?? Which IMO is high to begin with ........ -

I'd call the landlord and tell him he has to do something about their heating situation because yours is already costing a small fortune (which I'm sure will make him listen)
- I know it's not your responsibility to deal with their heat issues, but they're going to keep coming to you b/c you technically control the heat for their place - not the landlord (which is completely ridiculous - there should be 2 separate thermostats ........)

Do you pay for heat? If not, I would turn it up and crack a window. They are probably losing a lot of heat through the windows & roof. They are entitled to have their apartment heated to a certain degree by law.

I agree with MarisaK about talking to the landlord about installing a 2nd thermostat - in the long run it will save him money.

We don't pay for heat, nor do they. They pay for gas, we don't. The heat is run on gas, not oil. As for talking to the landlord, there's no point. They are old and set in their ways, and we've already had enough issues w/them which they couldn't give 2 sh!ts about. They will not spend the money to have that done, the same way they don't think it's necessary to have more than 1 mailbox for the mail. They specifically said they were changing the windows because "they did not want to hear any complaints". Well..then they should sell their house, because as a landlord you are going to hear complaints from time to time. They installed new windows in their apartment because of the "draft", but obviously it didn't do anything.

I'm sorry but I don't think it's my problem if their heating system doesn't work properly. I will not turn it up to 80 and bake for them to be warm. She knew going into it that the apartment was cold..so deal with it or move out like we are and I CANNOT WAIT FOR THAT DAY!!

We told them. We don't pay for heat, the landlord does hence why they would get upset if they heard we are keeping it at 70-74 when they would keep it at 68!!! We control the heat for the entire house and the guy downstairs hasn't complained, never does, only they have..but she also stated "she's always lived on the top floor of a house and it's always the hottest in the summer and coldest in the winter". Well if you knew that..then why'd you take the place?

The basement is always going to be naturally warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Just because the upstairs will naturally be warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter doesn't mean they aren't entitled to a certain amount of heat. They DO have a legal right to a certain amount of heat in their apartment. If they're not getting it, they need to go to the landlord.

I'm not sure what you want anyone to say. You clearly won't / can't do anything about it. Tell them to take it up with the landlord and just count the days until you move. It'll be soon enough.

Isn't the flip side of that they freeze so you can be comfortable? Obviously NEITHER of those is an appropriate situation. If you're going to be there much longer, both of you should go to the landlord together and tell him that something must be done. It IS your problem, too, since your apartment has to be too warm for theirs to be warm enough - and since you have the thermostat.

I wasn't really expecting anyone to say anything, I was just venting my frustration with these idiots once again.

Trust me I am counting down the days..and although they are entitled to have a certain amount of heat in their apartment, it's not like we aren't giving it..we have it on all day...everyday, which the landlord did not do when they lived there. So at this point..agian..it's not my problem, they can take it up w/them. Maybe if they do that..the landlord will see we weren't "lying" about it being a problem.

It amazes me how I never put 2 and 2 together. They've had A LOT of tenants ..now I know why. NOT ENOUGH HEAT!

How much longer are you there? If it's so miserable, can you just find a month-to-month or short term lease until you close on your house?

I think that's a good idea. At least then, if they knock on your door again, you can just say "I called the landlord about it. I suggest you do, too, as there's nothing more I can do."

Then hopefully they'll leave you alone and take it up with the right person.

Ok so I called the landlord...and..just like I suspected..she said 72 degrees is too high. She told me they need to wear warmer clothes. Apparently when she came to collect the rent the other day he came down w/no top on and shorts. What relevance that had to the reason i called her..I have no idea..

She told me not to turn it up higher because she is not going to pay $1000 for heat and she's monitoring the heating bill.

Just like I thought..lost cause. They are going to have to take it up w/her or the courts.

Give these whackos upstairs a quarter and tell them to call someone who cares! There are strict regulations on heat in winter you can check the NYS Attorney General website.Chat Icon

OHHHH I forgot to add..she also said she was going to see how much the bill came for this month because she's thinking about putting a lock on the thermostat which is in our apartment...imagine that!

Isn't that gonna be FUN!

IT ***** that they're bugging you but I totally feel their pain....there is nothing worse than coming home to a cold apartment. My landlord pays for heat and I have no thermostat upstairs. I've complained over and over again and it got me no where. Now I just turn my oven on with the door wide open for an hour or two and that seems to have been working.

I hate being cold.....by next winter I am outta here!
