Underwire Bras and BF?

A friend told me last night that I should not be wearing any underwire in my bras ( regular or nursing) if I intend to breastfeed.....

Never heard this before....

Re: Underwire Bras and BF?

I had heard this before I had DS so I asked my pediatrician.... she said that was the craziest thing she ever heard...

Her comment was that if underwire bras made BFing difficult, why do they make them and sell them? (I thought that was a good point!)

I have been successfully BF DS for almost 4 months now and have worn an underwire bra every day!!!

I've heard this but it doesn't make any sense to me. All the nursing bras I bought are underwire.

I never heard this before. I'd be a saggy mess without an underwire.

The reason they say not to wear underwire is because it can lead to plugged ducts and mastitiis from the pressure of the wire on your boobs. I couldn't wear any underwire when I was BFing because they hurt! The underwire put pressure on my boobs and was really uncomfortable. I think I was wearing 38F at the time though so if you're smaller you might not have the same problem.

Re: Underwire Bras and BF?

Underwire can cause trauma to the breast, which can cause lumps, or micro calcifications. I do mammos for a living.

ETA: my nursing bras no wire, but when im going some where im dressed up, i put on my reg. underwire bra, just looks nicer under a fitted shirt.

yes, I was told this by my LC due to the wire interferring with the milk supply and flow (something like that). I never wore bras, just sports bras or tanks, much easier to nurse with.

Re: Underwire Bras and BF?

the LC at my BF class mentioned this saying it may cause clogged milk ducts which can lead to mastitis... although i couldn't imagine not wearing an underwire when i go out

Re: Underwire Bras and BF?

That happened to me due to the underwire (& sleeping on my belly one night)....I was wearing underwire my whole pregnancy & then the first week/2 after delivery (& was BF)...then I got the worse pain & ended up w/ a clogged milk duct. NOT FUN AT ALL. I too was wearing 38F at the time...my dr. said the underwire may be to blame...so I looked online & found some very comfortable/supportive bras & thankfully never had a problem again.

Motherhood Maternity has some awesome bras without underwire. I stopped wearing underwire about half way through my pregnancy and never went back. It was just too uncomfortable.

And yes, I had also heard that about BFing and underwire.

It is true -- you are more likely to get painful plugged ducts with underwire. Its not a guarantee, but not worth the risk to me!
