Unemployed: How far would you commute...
If you knew you had a teaching job?
Since many of us just want the opportunity to teach in a school, what is the maximum commute you would consider to reach your "dreams"? (Time and/or Miles)

Re: Unemployed: How far would you commute...
I once commuted about 60-70 miles for a job. Luckily, there was no traffic to get there so it took literally 60 minutes. That is as far as I would go.

Re: Unemployed: How far would you commute...
I commute from Centereach to Manhattan every day. It is 2 hours in and 2.5 hours home. I take the LIRR, subway and drive to the train station.
I am insane.

Re: Unemployed: How far would you commute...
I commute from Ronkonkoma to Brooklyn. I leave my house at 5:00am and walk into the school at 7:30am. It's a 2.5 hr commute home as well. I take the LIRR. I absolutely hate it and am acutally seriously considering resigning and hopefully subbing on Long Island. But it will be hard to walk away, this is my 4th year teaching...I'm tenured and love my school.

My dad did that at age 60 no less. I have no idea how he did.

Re: Unemployed: How far would you commute...
To answer my own question: I was commuting West Babylon to Riverhead (50 miles one way). It wasn't that horrible, since I went against traffic.
I started thinking of 50 miles West and what a difference in the commute that would be.

Re: Unemployed: How far would you commute...
My record was 22 miles, but it was from central Nassau to Brooklyn on the Belt Parkway in rush hour. In nasty weather, it took me over 90 minutes to get home. Not fun, but it paid my rent.

I am currently unemployed.
I have applied for positions from the Hamptons - Manhattan.
I am in Ronkonkoma.
I will take anything at this point.

Re: Unemployed: How far would you commute...
I once drove from Stamford to Brooklyn everyday for work for a year. It was the worst year of my life.
I would be willing to travel 40-60miles, or up to an hour. I want a job desperately, but need my sanity as well.

Re: Unemployed: How far would you commute...
Driving, I was at my max- an hour. When I switched to the train, I added a half hour each way but I didn't mind because I can do something with that time. But that's my limit.

Re: Unemployed: How far would you commute...
One of my colleagues drives two hours each way... from NJ to LI... I don't know how she does it (and she's been doing it for over 20 years now...) It's not just the time in the car -- it's the hideous highways she needs to use to get to work and the multiple bridges she crosses everyday, too!

That's about what I do. It's 35 miles from Seaford to Brooklyn. I leave at 6am, stop for coffee and walk into the school around 7:20. Coming home I leave at 3 on the nose and get to Wantagh to the babysitter's house at 4.
The train would take about the same time in the morning, but longer in the afternoon.
About 1 hour is as much as I would want to commute.

Re: Unemployed: How far would you commute...
I am not unemplyed but when I was I was applying to schools in Westchester but never got calls. Looking back it was really unrealistic because in bad weather there is no way I would have gone in and I also had going over bridges.

I actually have an interview set up with a westchester school...however DH and I said we would consider moving that way if I got the job eventually after we researched the area a little more.

My sister commuted from Levittown to Westchester (Ardsley) for a year. It usually took her 45 minutes - 1 hour and somehow she never really hit that much traffic. I will say she said the tolls were the most annoying ($$$) part.
