Re: Unemployment Insurance
Yes! I don't know the exact rules regarding severance, but check online. You can even file online.

Re: Unemployment Insurance
I'm pretty sure unemployment is not retroactive. MY Fh just signed up..you sign up, you check in a week alter and then the 3rd week you would get the 1st check. He did it after his severance was up (he had a certain # of weeks of severance) but I'm not sure if he had to, or if he could have done it sooner.

In NY, I am pretty sure that severance is not a factor in determining unemployment. So you should be able to file right away.

Cobra relates to Health Insurance.
As soon as you stop working, you should file. Severance payment has nothing to do with unemployment benefits.

Unemployment insurance is when you are either laid off or your company relocates and you don't have a job anymore, NY state gives you a certain amount of $$$ until you find a job. It's usually from 6 months to 1 year.

Re: Unemployment Insurance
You can file online and if I remember I think it was the week after I was laid off. You are always a week behind in your checks. Severance does not matter either.
also any salary over $50,000 (I think that was the number) gets the same amount, $405 before taxes.
Also I had to go in after 2 months and sit in on a "job finding" class and have a current copy of my resume. Then 2 months after that I had to go in and prove that I had been searching for a job.
Unemployment is for 6 months
Good luck!

Re: Unemployment Insurance
You have to wait 1 or 2 weeks to file-I forget. Severance is not involved you still get unemployment. They tell you on the website to file Wed, but if you file Sunday you get the check Thursday

Re: Unemployment Insurance
I was laid off last October (10/13 to be exact). My company was paying me until 10/31. And I also received a severance package. I was able to file for unemployment 11/1.
Hope that helped
