Unnecessary laparoscopic surgery/MRI at 9 weeks... my nightmare.
Hello...
I thank anyone in advance for taking the time to read my story. It means the world to me.
Lonnnng story as short as I can make it...
I was seeing a "specialist" for what he believed to be a blood clot. He put me on Lovenox shots and I had been on them for two weeks when I went back to him for a follow up appointment. During that time he "found" a second baby in my fallopian tube. He measured the "baby", had me listen to the heartbeat and told me that it was two weeks behind the other REAL baby. He rushed me off to the hospital telling me that I could bleed to death if I didn't have the second baby removed immediately. I left his office in hysterics- meet my husband at the hospital and waited for my OBGYN to meet us and perform the laprascopic surgery based upon the findings of the "specialist." After waking up from the surgery my OBGYN was beside himself. There was NO OTHER BABY. I had a thorough MRI and two more sonograms- searching for the mystery baby...only to confirm that the "specialist" in fact made a HUGE ERROR!
I am currently 5 1/2 months pregnant and my REAL baby is doing wonderful. Yet, every single day of my life I look at the scars on my body and wonder if the anesthesia/surgery/MRI hurt my poor little baby girl. I try so hard not be angry. I try to be positive and thankful that my REAL pregnancy is going so well and baby girl is growing strong...but, IM SCARED. Is there anyone out there with advice, an experience like mine or anything that you think will help me get through this? I'd appreciate anything.

That is incredible. I can't believe they would do something like that. I'm sorry you went through this and I'm glad your baby is ok.
Can you sue for malpractice? At the very least report this specialist.

I can't even imagine what you went & are going through. I know it's hard, TRY not to stress out. The most important thing is that your DD is doing well.

Re: Unnecessary laparoscopic surgery/mri... my nightmare.
Hugs to you. Sit down with your OB and talk to him/her about your concerns about your baby. This is the only way that will calm you down an alleviate any fears you have. Then talk with your OB about why the specialist tbought what he did. Was there really a blood clot, was the lovenox necessary ? How can you tell the difference in "heartbeats" in a uterine baby and a fallopian tube baby when there is only one baby ? Think about filing a report with the State Medical Board about this specialist, and then consult an attorney about potential malpractice.
Most importantly, stay calm and try to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Think positive.

Unnecessary laparoscopic surgery/mri... my nightmare.
It is terrible that you had to go through with unnecessary surgery. It sounds like the specialist truly believed your life was in danger. I am not sure what lead to the diagnosis but you should speak to him to review what happen and why he came to such a conclusion. It may be necessary to consult a lawyer. If you are scared that the MRI and anesthesia could result in long term problems for you daughter you should talk to your OB as the pp suggested. Try to stay calm. Stress is not good for you or your unborn baby.

Unnecessary laparoscopic surgery/mri... my nightmare.
Thank you so much to everyone. Just knowing that I have so many kind thoughts around me really helps to deal with this on a day to day basis. I am still on the search to see if anyone else has had surgery during pregnancy or and MRI and if so what were the outcomes. As far as the "specialist" he never contacted me once after he realized he made the misdiagnosis. The other doctors who now care for me believe that it was a rare case of a mirror image sonogram. Of course I know that all decisions were made in good intentions- it was the after that is hard to deal with. The treatment or lack of from the specialist and the scars that worry me every day about the health of my unborn child. The doctors say that nothing will affect the baby or I would have had a miscarriage by now. :( I know that with the help of people like I meet here and with my family I eventually will find peace. Taking it all one day at a time.

I want nothing more than a healthy baby and to recover from this horrible experience.
Again, thank you all.

I'm sorry this happened to you, but honestly all doctors make mistakes they are human after all, as much as some of them act like gods.
A women I used to work with had to have emergency gallbaldder surgery during her pregnancy and the baby was fine.
Also, Mris are just magnets and considered safe during pregnancy

Re: Unnecessary laparoscopic surgery/mri... my nightmare.
As scary as your experience was my guess is your LO will be fine! While anesthesia etc isn't ideal in normal circumstances, certainly in your situation the risk of not having surgery (even though the exploratory was negative) was obviously much worse then the risk of anesthesia while pregnant. Had they not done the procedure and missed a possible ectopic it could have been deadly for you and your unborn DC. This one anesthetic event will likely not have any future impact on your DC's future. Believe me I know of mommas who have to undergo multiple anesthesias for different reasons, chemo etc while pregnant and they have had amazingly positive outcomes. Its weighing the risks and taking the best course which I think you did given the specialists concern over the situation. and thoughts for a fast recovery and healthy remaining few months of pregnancy.

Not for nothing- but WHY would your OB do emergency surgery on you without doing at least a SONO for him/herself? That's what I would be pissed about. IMO- your OB is the one who F*cked up.

I totally agree with this too... ANY doctor I've worked for would have done a sono at that moment too, in the hospital, to confirm placement of the ectopic, etc. I, personally, think that you have 2 big suits on your hands, the misdiagnosis from the "specialist" is one, but the much MUCH bigger one is for the OB who performed the surgery. And if it was laproscopic, you should have NO scars but teeny tiny ones, and I mean REALLY small scars, that's the whole point of laproscopic surgery, small incisions.
As far as your baby, I'm sure your "real" baby is perfectly fine, tons of women need to have various forms of surgery during pregnancy and babies come out perfectly fine.

Re: Unnecessary laparoscopic surgery/mri... my nightmare.
I am very sorry about this. Many prayers for you.
I am SURE your baby will be fine. Perfect, in fact. Even though it was unnecessary, I am sure the procedures were still safe and will not harm your baby.
I would absolutely consult an attorney or find out how to file complaints against both doctors. Malpractice can be very hard to prove, but it's worth it to see if there's any fault.
And find a new OBGYN stat!

Unnecessary laparoscopic surgery/mri... my nightmare.
Thank you all for your opinions and support. At this point after talking to many lawyers there is no case because nothing "bad" actually happened- physically. It is nearly impossible to win a case against doctors who believed in what they THOUGHT was evidence of a second baby (just intestine or colon). It makes me so upset to try and accept this but unfortunately this is where I am at. No- I don't have HUGE scars, but scars are there none the less. Scars both physically and emotionally that I'll have forever. At this point I am worried about the health of my baby more than anything. Wondering if anyone else ever had a "mirror image" sono, anesthesia or MRI while pregnant and the outcome of their pregnancy.

I did not have the mirror image sono, but I did have an MRI and surgery at 6 months pregnant to remove my gall bladder. My son is perfect and there were no issues thank goodness! There is no great time to have this happen, but the 2nd trimester is when they do things like this since all major organs are formed at that point. Hugs to you Mama!

There was a poster who had MRIs during her pregnancy when I was pregnant in 2008. I will see if I can find her posts for you. I don't blame you one bit for worrying about the effects of this all on your LO. Where were you in your pregnancy at the point of all of this? Not sure if you said.
eta- It was MrsRivera, she is an invalid user now I see. But it seems she had her MRI when she was 22 weeks pg. Her DD was fine.

Unnecessary laparoscopic surgery/MRI at 9 weeks... my nightmare.
Glad to know that there are others out there that have had surgery while pregnant and had good outcomes. My surgery was done at 9 weeks which is why I worry even more. Again, thank you for taking the time to read my story and reach out to me. Hoping that peace will eventually come.

My good friend had a large cyst and (I believe) her ovary removed while she was 20/21 weeks pregnant and her son was born with no health problems whatsoever I'm sorry this happened to you!
