Unpasteurized Asiago Cheese - ate it by accident
Hi ladies,
I am 29 weeks pregnant. I am very cautious about what I eat and stay away from all dangers. However, yesterday I ate 1 slice (maybe 1 1/2 slices) of Asiago cheese thinking it was provolone cheese. Realizing that it tasted different I checked the package and it said Asiago Cheese. I immediately looked at the ingredients and it said made with cultured milk. I called the company this morning and they said that the cheese is made with unpasteurized cultured milk and aged five months.
Needless to say I started crying hysterically and worrying. I spoke to my doctor and he said things should be fine. I am still worried and will monitor any symptoms. What gets me really nervous is that you do not have to feel symptoms at all and it can still spread to the baby - how do we protect the baby then?
Do you think that I am at risk for listeriosis given that it was only about 1 slice? Ive read hundreds of articles on line with mixed reports - some say Asiago is considered a hard cheese or semi-hard cheese and not to worry while other articles say it is a no no.
Any advice or comforting remarks/stories will be helpful.
Thanks, Concerned mama (Jackie)

i think you will be fine. Plenty people eat sushi, deli meat, cheese and drink wine during pregnancy. one slice of cheese i think you'll be fine. dont worry so much i sounds like you are very careful otherwise. sorry you got so upset. but i think you will be ok

In general, listeria is very uncommon, so your risk is very low. I wouldn't worry.

It had to actually have the listeria bacteria in it. Just because its a soft unpasteurized cheese doesn't automaticcaly make it have listeria. It has to have the bacteria. I wouldn't worry
