i wasn't but, if you're worried about losing your job, don't be! they legally MUST give you the 12 weeks FMLA. after that though, they don't have to hold your position if you take a longer leave, even if you are probationary track.
whatever time you take off (i.e. the 12 weeks) that just bumps your tenure date back that amount.

There are a lot of variables that can come into play. It's not always that "simple."

That is not always the case. Even though I was untenured, I was entitled to the same 2 years of leave as a tenured teacher, and from what I have seen/heard, that is the norm.

Re: Untenured and pregnant
they can't simply fire you if you're pregnant. that's against the law.
they can, however, fire you while pregnant if you have bad observations. while untenured they do not even have to give you a reason for getting rid of you, but most will if you're pregnant to cover their behinds.
when it comes to FMLA, it may depend on if you're there a year or not. tenure would be pushed back the months you're out.

WOW! really? i don't know if that's the case in my district because technically they are not legally obligated to give you that much leave, but it sounds like you're in a place where they do the right thing! you were also probably a great teacher that they wanted to hold onto, i am sure they wouldn't do the same for someone with poor observations or what have you.

Re: Untenured and pregnant
thanks everyone....I spoke to my union rep about it. And thank you to everyone who fm'ed me. I actually got pregnant with my son my first year of teaching in this district, and they were great about it. I am now pregnant with number 2, and again they are great, I just had a different question. Thanks again!!!
