UPDATE - Not good news - Taking Figaro to the vet tonight
I'm so beyond nervous. DH was suppose to take him during the week since he was off all week but he can't handle taking the cat and our son. So, I'm going tonight.
DH was going to go tonight but I know I wouldn't get any answers or half information. Besides, he's my little man. I just pray it's something simple and treatable. The worst part is, I know I won't get any results tonight and I'll just have to continue to wait.
***UPDATE I don't even know if I can type all this without breaking down. It doesn't look good. The vet said there is more than one thing going on with him. She said it definatley sounds like he has a thyroid problem but, in addition, his kidneys are very small and he was extremly dehydrated. That's not good especially since he's always drinking a ton of water. He could be having kidney failure. His gums are very pale and, to top it off, she found a mass in his stomach/intestine. She had her partner come and check him and he's being more optomistic thinking it might just be stool. So, last night they did a ton of bloodwork and gave him IV fluids so I could take him home last night. I brought him back this morning so they could take an xray of the mass. She said to try to stay optomistic but it's so hard. She said we have to wait to see what the bloodwork says. If it's just one thing like his thyroid, we can take care of that. Then we'll biopsy the mass. If the bloodwork shows it's more than one thing, she may make other suggestions.
So, I'm a freaking mess. I go home and tell DH all this and then tell him how much last night cost ($468) and he flips out on me. Tells me I'm crazy among other things. We didn't talk all night. I thought he cared. I need to find out what is wrong with Figaro and if it's something simple, help him. If it's not simple, we'll talk about it then.
2nd UPDATE - It's really bad. It's kidney failure. They can give him IV fluids to make him feel better but ultimatley, it's not going to help. OMG. I can't.
And another - UPDATE - The vet called me again. She said he doesn't seem to be in any pain. Which is what I thought. He's eating, drinking, attentive. So, she suggested we try giving him subq fluids every night and we can take him home. It may help him for a week, a couple of months but not a year. So, as long as he isn't suffering, we're going to do this and see how it goes. She doesn't feel it's necessary to put him down right now b/c other than his bloodwork and the weight loss, he looks fine.

I am so, so sorry....as long as he doesn't seem to be in pain you are doing the right thing. Don't worry about the $$$ right now, you'll get it from somewhere. (this coming from the person who has spent over $5K on her animals and never regrets it).

Re: UPDATE - Not good news - Taking Figaro to the vet tonight
My dachshund was in severe kidney failure, and my DH (he's a veterinarian) just wouldn't give up on her, and I think she was hospitalized for a week, and then every day she'd come back to the hospital for sub cutaneous fluids. Everyone else said she wasn't going to make it....that was seven years ago.
Don't know exactly what's going on with your cat, but I just wanted you to hear a situation where we thought our dog wasn't going to make it, and she turned around; it just took longer than expected.
I hope things work out

Re: UPDATE - Not good news - Taking Figaro to the vet tonight
Thank you all so much. Figaro is home and he's doing ok. He's taking the sub-q fluids like a champ and honestly, if it wasn't for his weight loss, I would never know anything was wrong. He's still his old self.
The vet gave us some special food to try and she said he may not like it at first. Well, he loves it! So, so far, so good. I know this isn't a cure but who knows what could happen.
As for the money, DH has calmed down some. I found this quote on a website for cat kidney failure.
"If you examine the situation, you come to the realization that your money is buying life. What else could be so precious?”
The fluids are only costing us $35 every 10 days so that's not so bad. After the inital shock wore off, DH has come to terms with the fact that he married an animal lover. He always knew it but he didn't realize the full extent.
