UPDATE! Day 3 Embryos
update: the nurse called today with our day 3 report. this is how it's shaking out so far:
one 10-cell
four 8-cell
four 7-cell
two 6-cell
one-3 cell
i thought this sounded pretty promising, right? she said they look for 6 cells or greater on day 3. but then she said "they have a lot of work to do before they can be frozen"  so now i'm worried as usual! i emailed the dr to get his opinion and i'm waiting to hear back.
what do you girls think? also is it usual to freeze on day 5 or day 6?? we are not doing a transfer. TIA

tomorrow i will get the call about how my embryos are doing.....it's day 3. is there anything specific i should ask? what information do they usually give at this point? TIA

They should tell you the number of cells they are and the grading (grade a,b,c or 1,2, etc.. Every lab does it different). If they don't tell you these things then ask!!

They should tell you the number of cells they are and the grading (grade a,b,c or 1,2, etc.. Every lab does it different). If they don't tell you these things then ask!!

so if they are 8 cells by tomorrow, why are we waiting until day 6 to freeze? what is supposed to happen between day 3 and day 6? oh, wait, is that when they become blasts?

I would ask how many and the grading like pennycat said... When they gave me my report they said how many progressed and that we were going to day 5 and that's all.. I took a pic of my chart at my ET... Yes I am weird... At day 3 my embryos were between 7 and 12 cells...I have read anywhere between 7 to 10 is normal... My 12 was a fast grower and it progressed to a blast on day 5. Fingers crosses for you!!!

Yup! They become blasts at day 5... hatching/expanding blasts at day 6 
They freeze at that point because they have more information about them the further along they are. That way when they transfer them back, they have a better idea of which ones are best.

My Embryologist/RE Office does not grade embryos that are not blasts (5day)...Day 3 is early and may be 8 cells by then depending on how they are doing... I do 5DT. They stay in the incubator so I never knew how they were at Day3...
I would just look forwrad to a 5DT or that several become frosties for a FET!... Good LUCK!!!!

thanks! my transfer actually got cancelled b/c my progesterone levels were too high on the day of trigger so we are freezing whatever we can and then doing an FET in the next month or two. once the embryos are frozen i feel like a can breathe a sigh of relief (for now) :)

Sounds good! Either 5 or 6 is fine, it depends on the embryologist and your embryos. All mine are great quality (apparently.. I mean.. it's what I've heard ...) and were all frozen on day 5.

thanks girls!! :) my dr emailed back and said he feels very good about our chances of having embryos to freeze. yay! i'm so grateful for every step of this crazy journey that actually goes well!!

not yet....today is day 5 and they told me to call tomorrow to see how many went to freeze....however i'm secretly hoping they call me today...lol.
