UPDATE : Graco Nautilus Spinoff to Bops post...4+ what type of carseats do you have?

What type of carseat is your 4+ DC using. Right now we have dd in a graco nautilus but we have problems with the buckle sticking (sometimes it can take up to 5 minutes to get her out). I feel she is too young for a booster but other alternatives are super $$$. So what is your 4 Year old riding in. TIA.

So I called Graco and explained to them that the buckle sticks on DDs Nautilus. They agreed to send me a new one BUT they wanted to charge me $10. I had to put up some resistance and they finally agreed to send me a new one free of charge. Catch is that the harness is on backorder until the end of February so I guess this problem is not that uncommon.

DS is still in his Britax Boulevard. I am not sure what we are going to switch him into, but it will likely be a high back booster that has the option to become a backless booster. He is 40 lbs and almost 4 1/2 years old but he is tall. At his 4 year visit he was 42 inches tall. Our 2007 Britax Boulevard car seat reaches 65 lbs. and 49 inches. I am going to have to measure him to see how tall he is now. I know he has grown since his 4 year appointment. I will likely go with another Britax. ETA: I measured him this morning and he is 44 inches tall. So DS is 68% for weight and 92% for height.

Re: Spinoff to Bops post...4+ what type of carseats do you have?

4.5 year old

Evenflow High Back Belted Booster (spare seat)

Graco Nautalis in my car (still 5pt harnesses) but i am not having problems with the buckle, if i was it would be converted to a reg high back booster.

i feel my DS is mature enough to be in a high back booster.

DD is almost 4.5 and still in her Britax Marathon. Don't plan on moving her anytime soon.

DS will be 5 in April. He's still in his Britax Roundabout. He's about 33 pounds and about 40 inches. Not sure what I will put him in next. Would like to keep him in 5 point harness for a while longer since he's so small.

You can use the Blvd until your DS either

-exceeds the weight
-the harness is as high as possible and the harness is no longer at or above the shoulders (meaning the slot where the harness comes out is below the shoulders)
OR
-the tips of the ears are above the seat shell.

FMVSS requires a height specification, but most manufacturers follow the above guide (Britax does)

5 and 6 year olds are in Britax youth seats. They are huge but very comfortable for them.

Ok I did the third measurement that britax has - the seated measurement and DS is 14.75 inches. The seat max is 16 inches. I think he is going to hit the seated measurement or height measurement much faster than the weight measurement. I guess I know what I am going to do this weekend.

Does the new baby bargains book have a section on booster/high back boosters?

DS's seat goes up to 50 lbs, he's only 41. Not sure of the name.

In grandma's car he has a booster, he gets threatened/reminded each time if he plays with the seat belt, takes him arms off or anything happens he gets a DOUBLE TIME OUT, no questions asked. He's fine in them.

IIHS does a fit test rating on belt positioning boosters.

http://www.iihs.org/research/topics/boosters/

That is non harnessed seats. If you want harnessed combination seats, my go to is the Nautilus (and it's sister, the Argos).

I also am liking what I've heard of the TrendZ Fast Back, though I haven't played with it in person yet. Same with teh Evenflo Secure Kid.

While I do appreciate the links the Nautilus has the same exact height/weight limits as my current car seat so I am not sure why you would recommend that when my son is almost out of that as a car seat?? I need the next stage up from this level of car seat. Does it go beyond 65 lbs? 49 inches?

I gave you information for both. I don't really recommend any particular booster since fit is the biggest factor there, and the IIHS does a great job of evaluating them. Some parents want to harness their child a little longer and yes, the top slots of the Nautilus are higher at 18.5" than the old style Blvd 65 at 16.5". That allows for 2" of torso growth before needing to turn it into a belt positioning booster. 2" of torso growth can take a long time to achieve for many kids.

ETA: Again, the 49" height "limit" is not how we judge height on Britax's seats. your DC has almost 2" of torso growth left in the seat and quite a few lbs to pack on before the seat is outgrown. Unless, of course, he has a long neck or large head and the tips of his ears are already at/above the top of the seat's shell you should be fine for a while.

Thanks! I think for many kids you are right, but for my son, who is on the taller end of the grow charts, I am going to have to go with a different seat. I really appreciate your help. Chat Icon
