*UPDATE* my DD needs a bone age xray

DD went for her physical yesterday and her ped wants her to go for a bone age xray. DD is 9 years and 8 months old. She is 49 inches tall and 55 pounds. She is 10th percentile for her weight and not even on the chart for her height....

Any mom's of older kids ever go through this? DD's Ped says that she might have an endocrine issue that she is not absorbing nutrients, or her thyroid might be off too.

They took 4 vials of blood yesterday....DD was hysterical...so we went to Friendly's for dinner and ice cream after!!

DD's father is short (5'7") but I am average height (5'5") Ped says that DD should be about 5'4" but if she keeps growing at this rate she won't even be 5' !!! I am trying not to worry, but as a mom....it's what I do best.

*Update* - The Dr. called me with DD's results...all of her bloodwork came back normal (thank goodness!) Her bone age is 2 years behind her cronological age!!! The doctor said that she has a "constitutional delay" and should just mature a bit later then the "norm" He said they might repeat the xray & do more testing if she doesn't catch up by 15-16 years old. I am sooo happy nothing is wrong with DD & she really is just a "peanut" !! Chat Icon

Re: my DD needs a bone age xray

I have to make an appt for a physical for my DD because I too am concerned about the rate at which my DD is growing
she iwill 7 yrs old next month and weighs 42-44lbs and is only 44 inches tall
all of her friends are so much taller
and we have been with the same firends for 3 years and they just keep getting taller and she isnt

I hope everything is ok with your DD

Re: my DD needs a bone age xray

I didnt experience on my dd.. but I had done when I was a child. I had testing done b/c i was small. They took hair samples, blood and did the bone age xray.

Im an xray tech and the bone age is simple its a quick one xray of the left hand and wrist. The radiologist then takes the xray and measures the spaces btwn the bones which can determine how more the child will grow.

Re: my DD needs a bone age xray

My oldest had one when he was five. He was in the 3rd percentile. Its just an xray. He was about 14-15 months behind, if i remember. They did blood work and family history. He was fine hormonally. He just turned 15 and is now just starting puberty. He is very small for his age. He is 5'1 and weigh 88lbs. They say he will be about 5'9". Sometimes I feel sorry for him

Re: my DD needs a bone age xray

I remember I was going to a lot of doctors when I was younger at one appt. when I was 13-14 the doctor was looking at an xray of my legs and he looked at my mom and said shes no where near done growing yet (i was 4'11" then) my mom and everyone she told thought this doctor was a quack because i was pretty short for my age!
I didnt really start growing until highschool....im now 5'8" and taller then most ppl...the doctor was dead on!

I wouldnt really worry the doctors will tell you if anything at all is going on, she may just be a late grower (if that makes sense?)
