UPDATE: now with pics of the problem!! anyone have the name of a professional babyproofer
we cannot find a gate that will work with our home setup. i have tried every one out there and it just won't work because of the type of railing we have and we don't have a wall on the other side. DS will be crawling in a few months, if not sooner, and we need to get this done ASAP. our main floor has a full flight of steps down since it's a high ranch.
i'm hoping a professional babyproofer can get us a custom made gate or can figure out what we can do.
please let me know if you know of one! *********************************** okay...here are pics of the problem. as i said below, the metal railing moves slightly so this gate that you see will not work because i can unlatch it just by moving the railing slightly. i don't know if i'll have this problem with all gates, so i may have to get a new banister
view looking down from kitchen. iron rails on right.
left wall where one bracket has to go
metal railing that is causing all the problems. we attached wood onto it but the railing shakes slightly.
view looking up from main landing. you can see the gate we installed this morning that isn't secure
help!!!

We are in NJ but this is who we used http://babysafe.com/index.html royal baby safety they were very good. He came to us the day after we called. I would also look at the safety gates from onestepahead.com and a pet gate.

Re: anyone have the name of a professional babyproofer
thank you for the ideas but those won't block my steps. it seems like nothing will especially since i have an iron railing.
i don't know what to do

Do you have a pic of the setup? I'm sure I, or someone else here, could find a gate for you that works. We're a pretty resourceful bunch...

i appreciate the offer. i will take a pic in a little bit.
the major problem with the railing is that it moves slightly. it's not 100% secure (although it is safe and i'm not worried about it with the baby). we just put a gate up--you'll see it when i post a picture. it latches fine, but if you push it just the right way, the railing moves just slightly enough that you can pop it open. granted that would take strength, but i don't put ANYTHING past a curious toddler!

How far is the wall opposite the stairs? Maybe if you got a long gate that could be placed stretching from wall to wall you could avoid the railing completely. Something like this: Wide gate

that wouldn't work because there is a hallway there and he could also get through the kitchen
the only thing we can do is block off the stairs or we'd literally need 4 gates making a maze out of our living room and kitchen. it would be a nightmare.

My Uncle has the same set up as you. He installed a wood post at the top of the stairs to attach the gate to. He has 3 Grandsons plus my DS who are all within 24 months of each other. He said he wasn't taking any chances.
When you think about it you wil probably use that gate for a few years, more if you follow up with another child so installing something permanent makes sense.

I have the same set up in a high ranch!!
It's so hard to describe, but my DH ending up removing the railing on the top where it borders the living room and putting in half a wall. Then, we gated across the hall, not the stairs!
What you could do, seeing your pics, is to 1) gate the kitchen doorway. 2) gate across the hall, from the railing to the wall that is just next to the kitchen. Let me look up some old pics and see if I can show you how we did it. We actually used on wide gate and didn't have to do our kitchen.

Another possible option is to make an "L" at the top post. Right now, there is just a little bracket at the base of the top post helping to hold things in place. If you had a 2' or 3' section of railing at the top, 90 degrees from the other railing, it would hold thing much more securely.

Re: UPDATE: now with pics of the problem!! anyone have the name of a professional babyproofer
i have a similar situation here. iron railing, but no way to attach to the railing at all. the iron drops down the stairs where i would need to attach something.
we use the configure gate. it attaches to the wall next to the stairs, and wraps around the railing and keeps going until it reaches the wall. it wasn't cheap, we had to buy several extension pieces to get it to the wall. but it does work.
i have a friend who also had to use a configure gate with like 5 or 6 extra sections and it stratches across her entire upper landing. lets you get to the bathroom and bedrooms, but not to the stairs at all.
for weird areas, its usually the only type of gate that will work, because it can be extended, and bent to fit whatever shape you need.

this sounds great but i have no idea what you're talking about
could you try explaining it a different way?

onestepahead sells this plastic thing that attaches to the side of a railing for the upstairs metal part. IMO if it is moving, I would get a new railing.

Hopefully this clears things up a little. Just a quick and dirty sketch I whipped up. Basically replace that tiny "L" shaped bracket on the floor with an actual railing. It will increase the strength tremendously, and will prevent any movement. Image Attachment(s):
