Update on my little all night party animal....

He slept in his bassinet from 8:00 until about 12:00 - which was awesome, then he woke up, I fed him, changed him, he fell asleep in my arms, I brought him to his bassinet... he cried and cried and cried....

So I tried out the swing... it did not work - I brought him down there, maybe bought me about 15 minutes, and then the howling began...

I held him, he fell asleep... put him down, he cried.... We partied almost the whole night that way... At around 3AM, I put him down in his bassinet and he lay there quietly... DH woke up and said - have you guys been up the whole time? I'm like - yup...

Then, he wakes up at 3:30... Chat Icon Cailen and I together sobbed... It was the 1st time I "lost" it, but I was suffering from some serious sleep dep - I think it scared DH b/c I have been very calm and together since he has been born... but I am just not used to sleeping and waking for 15 min-1.5 hr slots at a time... I pulled it together quickly, and then went thru it all again...

DH still feels I am holding him too much during the day and tending to him when he cries for "no" reason, So I have to deal with that as well...

But - he did sleep all morning, which was great - at around 5 AM I brought him into bed with me after his bottle, and we both slept until 9 - I won't be able to do this when I go back to work, but I feel a lot more rested today - that, and going to drive thru Starbucks this morning for 2 large cups of ice coffee did the trick!!!

Do you have a bouncy seat? Sometimes at night both Sarah & Andy preferred that to the swing. I used to put that on the floor right next to my bed, keep them propped up with rolled up receiving blankets on either side of them and eventually we both went to sleep. Chat Icon

Re: Update on my little all night party animal....

It will get better-

Are you keeping the lights very dim when you change/feed him?

A bedtime routine helped a little for us- but he may be too young to even start with that....

I think you mentioned he didn't like the swaddle- that helped us until he was four months old....Chat Icon

He is still young and this pattern will not stick by the time you have to go back to work.

From the time we brought DS home I never spoke to him in the middle of the night and I kept the lighting very dim and once I was done with the feeding the lights were out. I would just change him feed him and put him back down. Durning the day he wasnt the greatest napper and would take short cat naps in his pack and play or long naps on me and when he would sleep on me I usually napped too.

Do you have some sort of bedtime routine? Does he take a nap close to his bedtime? He might be over stimulated also. It will get better and by 6 weeks you should notice a difference of some sort even if it is minor.

No - he will not go into the bouncy unless he is completely out! The swing is more his style...

He is not colic either - just wants to be held.... Its just hard to hold him when I am falling asleep at the same time...

Yes - I don't talk to him, the lights are out in his room and I go in the glider...

I gave him a bath this morning, and he finally liked it, and he really was calm, so I am thinking of giving him the baby lavendar bath at nightime too, then a bottle, and putting him down...

The problem is, I am more routine oriented than DH - when DH puts him down, he gives him the bottle in the living room while watching TV - I do need a break every now and then, but since DH comes home so close to his bedtime, I want them to spend time together, and DH wants his own time to relax as well, so we are going to need to figure something out....

this is what I did...I would feed/change her (all lights were off after 10 pm) and teach her that nighttime is for sleeping.
I just did it that way in the beginning and it worked.

She was then waking up once a night and we would feed/change/burp her and then I would put her in the swing swaddled until she dozed off and then right into the bassinet...so she just basically woke up to eat.

We did this regardless of what time she got up before 7 am...

Good Luck...it WILL get better.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Update on my little all night party animal....

You will have some good nights and some bad nights.
I find no matter what I do, I cant get into a routine with Taylor. One night she is sleeping soundly for longer periods of time, other nights she is tossing and turning and I put her in the bassinet, the bouncy seat and swing until by some miracle one of them does the trick and she falls asleep.
DH bought me one of the best gifts the other week....a gift card to Starbucks!

Re: Update on my little all night party animal....

My DD was colic up until about 3 mos and I cried almost everyday due to sleep deprivation. Word of advice, ask for help! You need to sleep. Ask a family member or friend to come over and hold the baby while you sleep. It may be hard at first, especially if you hear him crying, but you will feel so much better physically and emotionally, which will make the middle of the parties much easier to handle.

Sounds like colic to me.

How old is DD?

It will get better- I promise.

The only advice I can give is:

1. get a good travel swing
2. sleep when she sleeps, golden rule. Un plug all phones, etc.
3. Car rides usually soothe.

Good look and thank gosh for drive thru coffee places. =)

This was the first 6 months of my life as a new mother. My advice is to put the husband in the spare room (or on the sofa...whatever you have) get your bed so you feel comfortable with the baby and co-sleep. We did that for around 3 months and it worked really well for us.

He has spent the last 9 months being all nice and warm and enclosed in your womb, now he is in the big bad world and its big and cold and scary! He just wants to be close to his Mommy...give in to it! You won't believe how quickly infancy goes by and I would give anything to have my 15 month old cuddle and sleep on me...give in to it!!!

Does he have gas? Did you try giving him the Mylicon drops?

Have you considered changing his formula?

I agree with Rachee. If he is happy in your arms, then hold him.

I always followed this golden rule: If he is happy laying there, don't pick him up. If he wants to be held, hold him. He's the boss right now. If he wants to be rocked for 2 hours, then rock him.

If you keep trying to get him to sleep, you will drive yourself mad (as you did last night/this morning). If he's not tired, just hold him, sing to him, etc. Even if it is 2 am. Just keep it dark and don't turn on the TV.

I highly recommend you read Secrets of the Baby Wisperer.

I agree! He is still so young that any routine like this can be broken within a short time if you do not want to cosleep. I am not a co-sleeper, but when Molly was an itty bitty baby, many a night I would put her in bed with me and she would immediately stop crying and go to sleep. Now at 6 months we have no issues with her needing to sleep in our bed...she sleeps in her crib all night. So give it a try you will all be happier!

Couldn't have said it better myself. There is nothing wrong with cosleeping if you do it safely and it sounds like that is what you baby needs. He is so young you can't put these huge expectations on him to sleep. This is all new to him, give it time. It does get better.

I agree with all of this. Remember, his crying is his way of communicating with you; not his trying to mulipulate you in anyway. Try looking at what he needs in a positive way instead of a negative way - maybe he needs to be nutured and cuddled a little more then other babies seem to.

Re: Update on my little all night party animal....

Which swing do you have? I found and a lot of others found as well, that the baby sometimes likes the side to side swing - we went out and bought it and ditched our other brand new swing. The Papasan cradle swing is super comfy and she loved the side to side motion.

Re: Update on my little all night party animal....

Oh god, I remember those days... Alex was colic, and wanted to be held CONSTANTLY. All day and all night, whenever she was awake, she was crying, and whenever she woke up during the night, she wanted to be held, and refused to sleep anywhere but my arms.

I really can't give you too much advice, other than to say, I promise, it WILL get better. It feels like this is forever, and on serious sleep deprivation, it feels and seems much worse than it really is.

The only way to tackle this is to do the following:

a - nap when baby naps (I'm SERIOUS. it's tempting to take care of household chores, surf LIF or email people, but you need to get sleep when you can)

b- alternate with DH. In the early days, DH and I had an agreement. While I was on maternity leave, I was responsible for night feedings/wakings, but that also meant that DH would get home from work at 5pm, and he would immediately take Alex whlie I slept until about 10pm or 11pm, and then I would take over. On weekends, Dh would share feeding responsibilities 100%

c- do what you can. Remember, your baby will not die from crying, so if you've reached your limit and you feel like your about to break, put baby down somewhere safe, and go take a shower. There's no shame or disgrace in taking a time-out for yourself to recoup.

If nothing else, remember, this too shall pass. For us, the worst lasted about 6 months. From 6months-1 year Alex still woke in the night, but she would go back to sleep more easily. By one year, she was sleeping 12-13 hours a night.
