update on taking placenta home

UPDATE: I just found out from Northshore -Manhasset that all you need to do is to sign a waiver/release form when you're admitted and you can take the placenta home. You can get the release form from the head nurse in labor & delivery!

I'm looking into placenta encapsulation but it seems like we might run into challenges trying to take the placenta home. Has anyone had success in taking it home? Chat Icon TIA for sharing!

Re: BTDT - strange ? but if you've had success taking your placenta home, what did you tell the ob/staff?

I don't know much about it, but out of curiosity... why would you want to take it home?

To plant it, with a tree, probably. I was considering doing the same thing.

You can dehydrate and encapsulate the placenta which according to Traditional Chinese Medicine is useful in tonifying the body after birth and warding postpartum blues Chat Icon You can read more about it on some sites like this: LINK

I have heard of doing this in some cultures but never actually knew anyone to do it personally.

Very interesting! But no, i don't plan on doing this...I don't even plan on keeping the umbilical cord after it falls off. SIL keeps it in a little box and says it looks like a raisin. LOL, makes me look at raisins in a whole new light Chat Icon

Never heard of that, but I for one will be letting the hospital keep mine. I have wonderful pictures of my placenta from when I had DS (Thanks to DH!). It is not a pretty site.

Many hospitals are pretty familiar with this. I don't think you will run into issues... especially if you live near populations that do it often.

Make sure your OB knows & I'd contact the hospital ahead of time.
