UPDATE w/ANOTHER QUESTION ~ Ebay - Reserve Auction question...
If you bid on something, you're the highest bidder, but the reserve is not met, and the Seller decides to sell the item to highest bidder, are you obligated to buy the item?
------------------------------------------------------------------------ UPDATE: This Seller is confusing the crap out of me.
My DH and I were bidding on a vehicle on Ebay Motors. We placed a number of bids, but never hit the reserve. We were more than willing to buy the vehicle at our bid price.
The Seller cancelled our bids twice!!! The first time we thought maybe it was a glitch with Ebay and maybe the bids never went through. The 2nd time there were comments attached to all the cancellations: Explanation: Please let me know your intention before you place a bid on my auction.
The Seller didn't just cancel our bids either. He cancelled 3 other Buyers' bids and attached the same comments.
Is this a scam??? I don't understand, why cancel legitimate bids? None of the bids met the reserve, so it's not like the Seller is obligated to sell the vehicle.

Re: Ebay - Reserve Auction question...
If the auction is already ended they can send you a second chance offer to buy it, but you have no obligation to buy it.
However if you have the highest bid in an active auction, remember the seller can always lower the reserve price making your highest bid exceed the reserve and thus obligating you to buy the item.

Re: UPDATE w/another QUESTION - Ebay - Reserve Auction question...
thanks for your help guys.
Any insight to my updated/additional question?
FWIW, this auction is now a moot point b/c we ended up buying the same type of vehicle yesterday, but we would have still been willing to purchase the one from Ebay had we won the auction.

Re: UPDATE w/ANOTHER QUESTION ~ Ebay - Reserve Auction question...
sounds like a case of shill bidding
the seller had friends or family bid up the item hoping you guys would bid again
then they canceled the bids and offered you the item
you can report this to ebay and they will investigate

Nobody outbid us, that's why I'm confused. The Seller cancelled all the higher bids. If he was unhappy with the bids, he wasn't obligated to sell the vehicle b/c the reserve hadn't been met. That's why I'm confused.

Re: UPDATE w/ANOTHER QUESTION ~ Ebay - Reserve Auction question...
i should also add that we sent him 2 direct messages basically asking what offers he was considering to let the vehicke go. he would never respond directly to us, but instead would revise his auction with a somewhat sarcastic comment directed at us. Which is one of the reasons why we decided not to persue the auction/reserve price.

yeah, you got that right.
I just can't figure out what kind of scam it would be or the Seller's motivation.

Sounds very fishy. I would report him The point of ebay is to sell your item and get the money, not retract the bids. Dumbasss

Re: UPDATE w/ANOTHER QUESTION ~ Ebay - Reserve Auction question...
This sounds like a ploy to get you to communicate off ebay and then he will try to scam you with a form of payment not recognized by ebay (like Western Union).

This sounds like a ploy to get you to communicate off ebay and then he will try to scam you with a form of payment not recognized by ebay (like Western Union).
But WE tried to communicate with him off of Ebay and instead he opted to respond to us by revising his listing, which makes me wonder if he thinks we're scam artists.
I really shouldn't be concerned with the listing anymore since we already purchased a similar vehicle, but I'm just baffled by this Seller. My curiousity has been piqued!
There's another thing I discovered. My DH and I have been searching for a very specific vehicle and upon my search, I stumbled upon the vehicle we were bidding on from the Ebay auction at a website called "One Stop Motors". The listing there was created in May 08 and the location (CA) was different from the Ebay listing (TX). I Googled "One Stop Motors" and from what I gather, they're a scam. I don't know if the Ebay Seller was scammed by them and hence his unusual behavior with his listing OR if the Ebay Seller is the scammer.
