****UPDATE WEDNESDAY****. No snack in 1st Grade...I'm back and I'm pi$$ed and I have an appointment with the Principal on Tuesday. HELP!
So sorry I forgot to update. We had a death in the family and things have been crazy.
The meeting went well. It was DH and myself, Principal, School Psych, Counselor and Teacher.
She can eat snack daily at her desk or on the reading carpet. They will set up a reward system for Ava to be sure that she actually "eats" at snack and lunchtime.
They were very professional and seemed to be concerned and wanted to do the right thing for Ava. At first the teacher didn't make eye contact with us and seemed uncomfortable. She warmed up towards the end of the meeting- not much though.
What do you think happens today at 11:45 am, right after I put the baby in for a nap???? The phone rings, it's the nurse- Ava vomitted in the classroom again.
I called the Neurologist that we have an appointment with in November and they have an opening tomorrow, so we will be going there.
So, the school def did the right thing, now we just need to hopefully get some answers from the Doctor.
Please keep us in you prayers.
Update 10/9/10
So, after my last update, thinks seemed o.k. Ava had snack at her desk during reading and didn't get sick.
When I picked her up on Thursday, she had a terrible headache and asked to skip the park to go home and lay down. I asked if she had her snack that day and she said "No, the teacher didn't tell me to."
O.k., maybe the teacher forgot for one day, not the end of the world, I would let it go. I told Ava that during solo reading to ask the teacher if she could eat at her desk.
On Friday, I get a phone call from the nurse to pick up Ava asap, because she threw up all over the classroom. I was so angry and upset. So, I asked the nurse if she ate her snack. Nurse calls teacher and teacher tells her that Ava only had a drink, didn't want to eat.
Brody was just in for a nap and I don't know a single person here to either pick her up or to stay with a sleeping baby.
I was finally able to get DH on the phone and he got her. I asked him to make an appointment with the principal asap.
I am soooooo upset! She said that she isn't comfortable eating food in the classroom in front of all of the other kids, when they can't eat. If she doesn't eat, she will continue to have migraines and throw up and be sent home!!!!!
Our meeting with the principal is Tuesday. What do I say???
**************************** OK, so, I typed a lonnnng update the other night, went to post it and lost it- don't know why.
So, Letter sent to teacher Monday morning, called Nurse and Principal on Thursday Morning.
Thursday night was open school night. Got a call from the teacher in the afternoon. No call from Principal.
Teacher said no snck in first grade, been this way for years. Nurse told me it was the first year they were doing it.
She said that lunch was soo early and that the specials were in the afternoon no time at all for snack. I told her that the Nurse said that if I got a note from Doctor, that Ava could go to Nurse 1x a day for something to eat, to prevent the migraine. She didn't seem thrilled, but agreed...and wouldn't you know it, Ava was at the nurse that very moment with a migraine- and she is not a complainer. She must have had her head down on her desk and was sent to the Nurse- she would never ask to go.
I was not happy that she would have to leave the classroom and sit in the Nurse's office with germs floating around, but I would give it a try. Ava was happy to do it.
My Mother, and all the teachers and the Principal at her school wanted me to go to the Superintendent. DH and I dedcided that we would let her go to the Nurse and see how it goes, before making a stink about it.
On Monday, Teacher told me at pick up that Ava will be having snack at her desk during reading, because she didn't want her missing class time. Ok, good for Ava, and now how about the 19 other hungry little ones???? *************************** Her lunch is early, from 10:30-11:10. School is from 8:05-2:25.
Since her lunch is early, it was decided that the first graders will get no snack this year.
My DD is a terrible eater, and gets migraines if she doesn't eat a little something every few hours.
I didn't want to rock the boat, since we are new to the district, so I didn't say anything and decided to give it time and see how she did. Well, she is starving and has a head ache most afternoons.
I have asked other Moms in the class, and they would like the children to have snack, but haven't said anything to the teacher.
I wrote a very nice note to the teacher Sunday night inquiring if snack may be brought back into the schedule. No answer, today is Thursday...Yesterday, I called the Nurse, and she said that I can get a Doctor's note and that Ava can leave class to eat snack in the nurse's office 2x a day..I do not want to remove her from class.
Then, I called the Principal, explained again, in a very nice way my concerns and was told she would call me back. No call back form her...
WHat do I do??? I was a teacher myself, My Mom works in an Elem School, several friends are teachers and I even have a friend who is a Principal and they said no snack at this age is ridiculous and it is even worse that they are not responding to me!!!
What do I do?? I am not the complaining type, but DD is already saying that school is too long, she is hungry and doesn't want to go. She never said that once in her old school.

Re: Remember my post last week about my first grader not getting snack at school....
I'd go up to the school and speak to whomever is available - nurse or principal. Let them know that you did try to reach them via phone, but that you've had no response from anyone. You'll absolutely get a response at that point.

I would suggest going up too. I can imagine it is a bit crazy in the beginning of school so it is easier to put off the phone calls, but you can't put off a parent standing in the office. At least at that point they know you are really concerned about the issue.

I would email the principal & if you don't a response, you can cc Superintendent McDermott. I have her email if you need it.
Also, cross post this to teacher's board. Frankly, the teacher has had 4 days to get back to you & that is plenty of time.

I am a teacher and I always tell the parents of my students that I will respond to all notes/phone calls within 24-48 hours. You absolutely should have heard back and I personally think it is ridiculous for first graders not to get a snack at some point during the day. I teach Kindergarten and right now we have a morning and afternoon snack. In a few weeks I will cut down to one snack a day. If I get an early lunch period I have snack in the afternoon. If we get a late lunch period we have snack in the morning.

I'm a kindergarten teacher as well and no snack is unacceptable. My lunch period is from 10:20-11:10 and I have my snack around 1:30. I would contact the teacher again and try and speak to her directly. I try and get back to parents right away and that is why I give them my work email to contact me. For me that is the best way. Good Luck.

I would call the teacher again, and the principal....if I didn't hear back within a reasonable amount of time, I would def call the superintendent. Regardless of what the outcome is (and I think it's ABSURD for kid in elementary school not to have snack) it is extremely unprofessional for both the teacher and principal not to call you back.

I've learned that no matter small or big the situation at hand with your child make a dela of it! Go up there, talk to the principal. Tel lher you went through the chain of commands (teacher, nurse, princ) but haven't gotten anywhere and this is a concern for you and your child. You don't have to be harsh when doing it (sounds like you've got a nice handle on how to be conservative and calm) so take it from there.
good luck

I'm glad she's chosen to let her eat in the classroom. Be ready for the influx of moms asking why your daughter can eat but their child can't...I'm sure you aren't the only one that thinks it's ridiculous.

This really makes me mad!!! My DS is in second grade and they have 2 snacks!! I thought DS was making it up (he likes to eat ) So I wrote his teacher a note and she said they seem to need it! I hope more parents complain about this to the school!

I'm glad Ava's getting snack in class.. but I have to say that I feel really badly for the rest of the kids! Not only are they hungry.. but now they get to see someone eating, which only gets your tummy growling more! I really don't see an issue with letting every child have a small snack during reading. I think the school is being silly.

Tell them to send her to the nurse's office with her snack and book. Seems like a simple enough solution

I agree. If she's not comfortable eating in front of everyone else, and no other parents are pushing to have snack time added, I think your only choice is to send her to the nurse for a few minutes.

I agree. I know it would be better if the entire class had a snack, but in her case it's a medical condition & it's non-negotiable. She must be sent to the nurse. While she's embarassed now, if it becomes a regular thing - it will be just like any of the kids that get pullled from her class regularly.
The teacher should really make the private reading time, a time for snack & reading - provided it's something not messy & dry.

I never understood taking snack away from kids. When I was in grammar school, we had snack every day 10:00-10:15 (through 8th grade) It was the best!

Re: Another update 10/9/10. No snack in 1st Grade...I'm back and I'm pi$$ed and I have an appointment with the Principal on Tuesday. HELP!
In our school anyone with an early or late lunch gets snack..(10:30 being early, 12:30 being late)...it's really teacher discretion but if I, as a teacher (which I am), see that children are hungry, you let them eat-they cannot focus on learning if they are hungry and that is a fact!
As for the school, it's rude and unacceptable that they would not even write you back a short note saying they were looking into it or making a phone/in person appointment...it's not September anymore, so that's not an excuse! I hope you get to the bottom of this and that your daughter feels ok!

First of all ....it must be so stressful on Ava to be singled out like this. But she needs this snack. I would meet with the principal and STRESS how important this is to her. You have last week as an example of what happens when they DON'T make sure she has a snack.
Hope they comply....it sounds like a ridiculous rule.

Just reading this all for the first time. Maybe instead of going through all these networks and receiving the same answers, go to your DR. Go get a script that says your dd needs to eat every few hrs (specify hrs) and then regardless of what teacher/principal say, it needs to go into effect for health reasons (migraine/puking). Even if you continue with the meeting with the principal, have that script written up. IMO...theres no room for talk, let the DR tell them what they need to do.

I have a note from the Pediatrician stating that she needs to have a snack at 9:30 every morning. The teacher and the nurse have a copy.
I will let you all know how it goes tomorrow.
Thanks

I just realized your previous post said that the teacher & principal wanted you to go to the superintendent??
Does he determine if they get snack? If that's the case, I think I'd email her. I have her email address if you want it.
Good luck today!
