UPDATED!! :-) UGH! they messed up my tenure date!
so... i just had a meeting with my principal to go over my first observation. i'm a speech therapist, not a classroom teacher. he looked and informed me that they have my tenure date down as 2010. i started in the fall of 2005!! apparently ( and i forgot this) the first year i was here was a maternity fill in position. so that doesn't count towards tenure. ok, fine. BUT, they have last year down as a leave position, too... um, no! none of the other speech therapists were out last year. so that year should count towards tenure. just annoying! and we got a new director this year, so it not even like the old director is here to straighten it out. i just emailed personnal office, so hopefully, it'll all work out.. here i was so excited that this would be the last year of 3 observations!
UPDATE!: so i e-mailed the HR lady and had her look into it... turns out that there was a mistake and that my first year will count towards my tenure! which means... if i don't screw up too badly this year, i'll be tenured in september!

Re: UGH! they messed up my tenure date!
you should check with your central office. you still could have been a leave because that was your title, even though no one was out. that's how my first year was--even though i wasn't replacing anyone.
check your paperwork.
best of luck

3?? lucky you. I'm just starting the 1st of 3 yrs with 5 observations eta: sorry they're screwing with your date. My guess is that the position wasn't board approved as tenure track until this year. Schools pull this cr@p all the time

Re: UGH! they messed up my tenure date!
for a tenure track position you should have signed a letter/contract saying you were hired probationary track effective from a date to another date (usually three years later?) probationary track is the key word... if it's not in any contracts you signed, you were probably hired as a leave... that sucks.... hang in there...

they do this in my district too- i know a lot of people who they let that first year as a leave count...

SOME districts do this, but only if a tenure track position actually becomes available because people resign or enrollment increases. the dsitrict is not legally bound to count leave replacement years toward tenure.... think of the tenured teachers that come back for their jobs after their leave and leave replacements are granted in the meantime....then there are too many teachers.
if it did not specifically say probationary track, i wouldn't put money on it.... if the district says it will count have them put it in writing....
