**UPDATED 1 year later** So Shane's speech evaluation report is in (info for other mommies thinking about getting DC evaluated)....
So some of you will recall Shane was observed for EI speech services last month. Well we had the review meeting yesterday to set up a plan for him going forward. Again I'll say I'm pleasantly surprised with the efficiency of the evaluation process so far
So the little dude qualifies for speech, which is NOT a surprise at all. He's limited in vocabulary, although he does understand 90% of what I say/request. So no news there. The evaluation is based on certain criteria that was "missing" in his communication effort. His delay was quantified at "-2.20" on their scale.
One thing that I wasn't expecting is another delay in the "Cognitive" area -- basically he has a little issue with attention span and "functional play". Toys don't really hold his attention for more than a minute or two, he prefers to kind of throw them around So they are also going to provide "special instruction" to work on the cognitive development.
They noted a minor delay (not enough for any followup) in social/emotional areas (i.e.: he didn't show pride in his accomplishments/direct an adult's attention toward his activity) - I'm not sure about that one though, as he frequently does both of those at home with me -- and his "accomplishments" are quite often scaling a piece of furniture or getting our dog to tap out from his UFC-worthy wrestling skills so my "attention" is usually a string of "Shane we don't DO THAT!"'s
So the plan is to have speech 2xweek for 30 minutes each and 30 minutes of special instruction 1xweek.
Hope this helps anyone who's on the fence about starting the process. At Shane's 18mo visit my ped wasn't concerned but by 21 months I knew he was behind so just got started on my own, why wait til 24 months if he could be getting help now?
They also offered an evaluation on sensory development, which I accepted, for no other reason than to find out more about him (the therapist really loved when I said that, she got all teary-eyed ) He doesnt have any "perseverating" behaviors of note, but I want all the info I can get about what makes him tick!!
Any questions just FM me, the process is super easy and I'm really happy we're doing it. I wanna talk to my little boy
UPDATE-- Sept 7, 2011. EI works. My kiddo doesn't stop talking ALL DAY LONG. Full on conversations, sentences, new words every day. His therapist is AMAZING. In fact he has talked himself right out of CPSE services from age 3 onward So we are petitioning for an extension of EI services until December (fingers crossed!)
Shane will be 3 on Saturday. His progress this year has been simply, utterly, amazing.
His SLP is baking a birthday cake for him
NYC does a lot wrong in its efforts to help the humans who live here, both adult and child-sized. EI is one thing, in my opinion, that they're doing RIGHT.
So this is my blanket THANK YOU to all the other speech moms and SLPs here on LIF, you've all helped me so much more than you know

Re: So Shane's speech evaluation report is in (info for other mommies thinking about getting DC evaluated)....
As someone who has BTDT it is so amazing that he is getting speech. EI works wonders. You will see a big difference in only a few months. Jack seems to be blowing me away on a daily basis now with what he says.
Also, one other thing - if you feel a therapist isn't a good fit for Shane speak up right away. I wasted 8 months because I thought Jack was just being stubborn with the therapist. He kicked, screamed, and cried when she came. Now with his new one - he runs to the door and gives her big hugs and kisses. I should have tossed the first one out much earlier!

Colette, Thats awesome news!!!! I've seen so many of my friends kids do sooo amazingly well with the program it's amazing!!!
Just out of curiosity, how many words did Shane have...I'm getting nervous with Chels bc she was always a talker and would pick up words quickly, but all of the sudden the past month just stop...she still uses the same words she had but isn't picking up that many new ones at the rate she was...so not sure what is going on there...any insight would be helpful on where Shane was at 21 mos!!!
Thanks again!!!!

Colette, you are going to be so pleased with the progress that Shane makes. Speech is not a miracle worker, but it sure does make a huge difference. Nina is a new child since she started 6 weeks ago!
Good for you for taking the initiative!!!

I am so happy that the experience is going smoothly and that little Shane is able to get the services he needs. I decided to wait on Reilly until Oct when she is 24 months, in the hopes that she'll have more words and also to wait for the new set of criteria to kick in for the 2 year mark. I bet before you know it, you won't be able to shut Shane up! Thanks for sharing honey!

I am a special ed teacher and I do ei evals and services. I think it is great that you are so open minded about the services - because not all parents are!!! The one thing I can say as a teacher that even though the therapists are coming to your house, the more important part is that you take what they suggest and carry it over the rest of the time they are not there! Good luck!!!!!!!!

Re: So Shane's speech evaluation report is in (info for other mommies thinking about getting DC evaluated)....
Jen that is without a doubt the HARDEST question that's getting thrown at me :D his "words" are really more akin to one or two syllable grunty-babbly-sounds. He was "on track" up to about 16-17 months or so, introducing new words, said "da da da" with deliberation early in the game etc. But he just sort of "plateaud" around that time and new words have been infrequently added - I'd say in total he's using about 15-20 words on the regular. Maybe? On the plus side he's advanced in physical/motor skills and they did call him "adorable" in the report
Diana thanks for that info on the therapists, the women who did the evaluations got hugs and kisses as they departed so hopefully he'll respond well to whomever they assign us to but I'll keep that in mind!!!!

Well, speech can be taught, but you have to be born adorable!

Thank you!!!!! And I totally agree, I told DH it's like when our dog was a new puppy and we got a trainer to visit -- she wasn't training the DOG she was training US So I'm going to be in "school" as well I guess. It's ok the sahm routine can get a little monotonous so this will be interesting and productive for us I'm sure!!

This is my ONLY downtime I swear. Jack is getting speech right now, Tyler is mesmerized watching them, and here I sit with a hot cup of tea in my hand and on the computer. Thank god for speech therapy!

I am thrilled to Shane's amazing progress! You were an inspiration to me, and I only hope that I will be posting with similar results a year from now. There are many days that I question the effectiveness of EI, but I know that it takes time, and patience.
