UPDATED in 1st post!!!! If your DC had any kind of procedure and had to go under anesthesia...
how did you handle DC not eating? DS's surgery is scheduled for next Monday. I dont find out the time until a couple of days before but from what I understand it goes in age order. DS is 2 so I am hoping he is one of the 1st ones but he can't eat for 8 hours before his surgery. I can't imagine if his surgery is in the afternoon basically having to starve him all morning and not letting him eat
How did your child wake up from the anesthesia...were they calm or upset?
DS has to be recircumsized and I can't put it off anymore. As much as I dont want to do it, it has to be done. From some of the other moms on here who have had the same thing happen to their DS, I know it is a quick 10-15 min. surgery but I am still SO nervous!
UPDATE 4/17
So of course they called today and his surgery isn't scheduled until 11:30 Monday morning. We have to arrive at 10:30. They said he cant have anything to eat after midnight the night before but he can have clear liquids up to 3 hours before surgery. He wakes up around 7:30 so I am going to have to keep him busy somehow for almost 3 hours before his surgery
I am a NERVOUS wreck, especially about the anesthesia part. I know it is a short procedure, maybe 10-15 min. and he will not have to be intubated (they won't be putting the tube down his throat) so I think it is more a twilight anesthesia (he will be sleeping but breathing on his own), but still nerve wracking for me. And of course I am reading online about anesthesia and toddlers
I will definetely be asking for prayers on Sunday night

Re: If your DC had any kind of procedure and had to go under anesthesia...
DD had to undergo a procedure when she was 15 months and was under anesthesia. We were supposed to be the first appointment of the day, I think we had to be at the hospital at 7am for an 8am procedure. So she was hungry and wanted a bottle, but couldn't have one...that was rough
We actually got bumped to #2 because an infant needed to go before us. (the baby was not an emergency case either, just scheduled then). I completely understood that the infant should have been first, but wished they had told us in advance b/c we would have rescheduled to another day when DD could be first. I think they were like 2-3 hours behind schedule because of that (and they had equipment problems in the room) DD was HUNGRY We just tried to distract her as much as possible while we waited.
I don't have any advice since you said he needs to have it done ASAP, otherwise I'd say call and see if anyone's scheduled before him and reschedule if there IS someone before him.

Re: If your DC had any kind of procedure and had to go under anesthesia...
DS had the tubes put in his ears in Feb at 22 months. He could not have anything after midnight the night before. It was alos in age order. We had a 7:30am appointment, and that was with 2 kids ahead of us--one was a baby and another was an infant around 1. We had to wait an hour in the waiting room before we were taken, so We really went in around 8:30 and then there was more prep and he really didn't go down till 9-9:30. I was soooo worried about this cause DS has his morning milk right when he wakes up and always asks for it. Oddly enough, that morning, he never asked for anything and was wonderful. He never even said he was hungry.
The procedure was quick and he was only out for like 15min. When he woke up from the anasthesia, he was screaming. I think mostly cause he was in there with strangers and he has a big stranger anxiety. They had us come in right after he got up. He cried for about 20min, then calmed down. Then they gave him some apple juice and I had some cheerios and he perked up a bit. He passed out in the car on the way home and slept at home for another 3 hours. When he woke up from his nap, he was in a terrific mood. I mean, it was one of his best days. We took him to IHOP for a smiley faced pancake and he was in seventh heaven.
Bring some juice and a snack for when he wakes up. Is he's upset, it'll probably help calm him down. Bring some toys for the waiting and and to help keep his mind off it. Maybe something new to really hold his attention.

Re: If your DC had any kind of procedure and had to go under anesthesia...
Alex was about 2 when she had to undergo eye stent surgery, which required anesthesia. They do it in age order, so she was the first to go, at about 7:30am. Trust me, the nurses don't want to deal with an overly cranky baby so they will probably schedule your son early in the morning.
When she woke up, I can't lie, she was VERY upset, but that's because they wouldn't let us in the recovery room when she woke up. I could hear her crying down the hall But once her vitals were good, they brought her to me and she immediately calmed down and just cuddled with me on the hospital bed, all groggy, for about an hour and a half. They wouldn't release her until she ate and drank something.
She was groggy for a few hours, but then perked up and was herself by the end of the day
I have to say, it's hard, but MUCH harder for mommy than anyone else. He won't remember this, I promise. Just try to stay strong for him, and don't let him see that you are scared because at this point, he has no reason to be scared himself.

Re: If your DC had any kind of procedure and had to go under anesthesia...
My other question is what kind of anesthesia was everyone's DS put under with...just the mask or IV sedation as well? DS will be getting both. I am super nervous about the IV but it is more of a "twilight" (they dont have to incubate him, meaning put a tube down his throat).

In our case, DS just had the mask. He was out in like 15 sec after they gave it to him. I was in the room with him for that and holding his hands. When he was asleep, they asked me to leave.

Re: If your DC had any kind of procedure and had to go under anesthesia...
Kaydyn just had surgery this morning. We called yesterday and found out she had surgery at 11am and we had to be at the hospital at 10am. She couldn't have anything after midnight. We tried to put her in late last night and gave her the last bottle at 10:30pm.
She woke up around 8am this morning and I just tried to keep her occupied...she asked for her bottle a few times but not too bad. Then the hospital called and pushed her surgery back to 12pm. She was ok until we got in the car and asked for her bottle the whole way to the hospital.
Kaydyn did not wake up very well. She hasn't gotten sick (thank goodness) but she was crying hysterically from the time she started waking up from the anesthesia until we got in the car and she fell asleep.
Now we are home and she seems to be fine...she's running around like her normal, energetic self.
HTH!!!

Both - they used the mask to gas him and to get him to sleep so they could IV him. He had to get an MRI last month (he was 13 months) and just like in your case, we didn't find out until a couple of days before what time his procedure was. It did go according to age, however, his was not until 9. (procedure could have been from 7-12). He couldn't eat 8 hours before and i think couldn't drink up to 3 hours before. He could have apple juice up until 3 hours before, so that is what we gave him. It worked out ok. He was ok when he woke up. He handled it really well. He was a little groggy, and not so hungry, but by the evening, he was fine.

Kaydyn actually had both. They gave her an oral sedative in the pre-op area. Then they took her into the OR and they gave her a mask to put her under and then put the IV in for the remainder of the surgery. They said for her age (14 months) they don't like to put the IV in while they are awake b/c it can be difficult.

Mask, for ear tubes. I was a complete mess before hand, and almost called to cancel that morning, but it was the best thing I have ever done for him.
It's really hard, but just try not to worry!

Re: UPDATED in 1st post!!!! If your DC had any kind of procedure and had to go under anesthesia...
DS recently had surgery. We were surprised that we could distract him from his morning bottle by giving him toys to play with and hanging out with him until it was time to go. He never even asked for his bottle.
He had oral sedation in the pre-op area and then a mask (DH went into the op room for that part) and finally IV.
The worst part of it was when he came out of the sedation. We were with him but he was screaming and very angry. He didn't stop until we left the hospital.
But after that, he was fine. We were amazed at how he bounced back.
It is nerve-wracking for you, I know
