UPDATED: Only 7 weeks and have to go for a glucose test
My doctor just called and said that my sugars were pretty high and wants me to go for the hour glucose test... But I am only 7 weeks Has anyone had to do this before, I am so nervous. She did say it could be bc I ate right before the test but I am still so worried...
UPDATE: Well, I failed the one hour and have to go for the three hour tomorrow. I know it is somewhat normal for women to have GD but I think it is pretty rare to get it this early. The worse is that I keep googling and finding how 'dangerous it is for a developing fetus'.... I am going to have to go throught my entire pregnancy with this

Re: Only 7 weeks and have to go for a glucose test
i went for my glucose test at 16 weeks, because of my family history of diabetes.
follow what the doctor says to do with regards to fasting and it'll be okay. There are a lot of girls on here with GD and we're here to help!!!!!!
does it bite and stink? YEP....is it the end of the world? No....you can get through it and possibly even LOSE WEIGHT because of it (i'm still down 2 pounds from my 10 week weight and i'm 32 weeks)!!!

I agree with Jess that yes it stinks. But it's all worth it. I still wish i was as lucky as her to be losing weight. But i'm still able to maintain my weight once i found out i had GD. Good Luck on your test!!

Re: Only 7 weeks and have to go for a glucose test
don't be nervous.
I wish they wouldn't call this a "test" b/c it makes you think you've "failed" if in fact your sugars are high. but it's not a failure, at all!!!!!
the sooner you know about ANY possible issues, the better.
you'll be ok. good luck with everything.

Re: Only 7 weeks and have to go for a glucose test
Thank you so much for all the advice and support! I just never thought I would be worring about this so early on. I just never heard of anyone going for the glucose test so early.

with every appointment, i have to bring FMU (first morning urine) and i'd have to think if any 'sugars' spilled into that - i would've been sent earlier...
did you have diabetes prior to pregnancy? I get asked this EVERY time...because if you are diagnosed PRIOR to 26-28 weeks, they can CLAIM that you were (even though i KNOW i was not, i get tested every year)...
my docs' almost don't know how to treat me anymore - because i tested positive SO early - i should be medicated by now....but i'm still controlling it with diet alone...so i've confused them all! when they read my chart - they always have to go back and read it again...it's rather entertaining...

No, I did not have diabetes prior to pregnancy. And the only family history is two out of three of my sisters had GD in their first pregnancy. But neither had it this early.

Re: Only 7 weeks and have to go for a glucose test
I had to go for the 3 hour at like week 10 because my sugar came back high. I was on prednisone so they were worried that raised my sugars.
I also had just eaten before the bloodwork..anway after the 3 hour everything came back totally normal so try not to worry! Either way it goes the good thing is they are monitoring you early!
best of luck.

Re: Only 7 weeks and have to go for a glucose test
When I went for my 1st part of the ultrascreen, 11 1/2 weeks, my sugar was high and they sent me for the 3 hour test (not the 1 hour) b/c pre-pregnancy my sugars were borderline and b/c of family history. My sugars came back fine. At the regular time that you would have your sugar tested I have to repeat the 3 hour again...for a few days I was convinced that I was GD and I researched alot of stuff and posted on here too. As much as you don't want to be GD, you know it is temporary and safe...meaning they have so much help out there for GD and diets...you will be fine. I have a feeling it was b/c you ate before b/c I had too!!!! Good Luck and don't worry (well try not to)

Re: Only 7 weeks and have to go for a glucose test
they may try and tell you that you had it before....(they have told me that, and friends of mine in the same situation were told the same thing).... don't worry about it - you are not in control of what's going on with your body right now.... we'll see what happens once the baby comes (for both of us!)!!!!
right now - just take solace in the fact that if you DO have it, it's 100% treatable and controlable. it also means that you will get more attention by doctors (more appointments, more sonograms - the SILVER lining...we've seen Emma every 4 weeks since week 20)...and your overall health will be better, because you will learn how to eat a more balanced diet.
i do feel better 'informed' now as to how my body processes things and how just food affects us overall..
do NOT hesitate to ask any ????

I completely agree with this. While I have no experience with having to get tested early I found out this week that I failed my one hour test. I was so upset at first because I felt like it was something that was under my control and I had done a disservice to my baby. After doing some research and posting about it on here I realized that GD is not your "fault" in any way. Wishing you lots of luck, but whatever the outcome you will be able to manage it

that's what makes me crazy too.... and then people post about - i fasted, so i passed!!!! NO, you passed because your blood is FINE. You cannot FOOL/TRICK/OUTWIT your blood. If you have it - it's there and if you don't - it's not! We have no control at ALL about this!
I have cut & pasted my comment of, 'if you do NOT have it, you can have 35 lollypops before the test and pass and if you HAVE it, you can starve for 3 days and still fail' thing so many times it's not funny!

Re: UPDATED: Only 7 weeks and have to go for a glucose test
Just as an FYI - If you do have GD (I did) it's only a danger to your baby if left untreated. I was diagnosed at 27 weeks and I strictly followed the GD diet, I was on insulin 4X/day, and I tested my sugars after every meal and Emerson was born healthy with NO complications. As soon as she was delivered my GD went away and I've been fine since. Don't get too freaked out. GD is common and you'll be strictly monitored and everything will be fine with the baby.

I know it must be tough, but it's better to know sooner rather than later...
