UPDATED Q - Did anyone have a UTI very early in their pregnancy and take AUGMENTIN? Please help

I am 4 wks pg with #2 and might have a UTI - won't know until Monday but, if I do OB will put me on Macrobid.

I am SO SO SO SO distraught over this. I am one of those people who NEVER takes any medications and is super cautious while pregnant and this is killing me. Maybe its just the hormones but, I actually started crying on the way home. I am also worried about having an infection so early in pregnancy

I guess I just need to hear this happened to someone else and their baby turned out just fine with no problems at all.

Thank you for indulging this nuerotic post - I'm just SO upset right now and this is the only thing I could think of to make me feel better. No one but DH and my mom even knows I am pg so that is just making it worse. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: Turns out I do have a UTI and OB is prescribing AUGMENTIN - has anyone ever taken this during pregnancy? TIA!

Re: Did anyone have a UTI very early in their pregnancy? Please help

I did within the first 4 weeks. In fact i don't think i even knew 100% that i was pg but we were trying so i warned the doctor that it was a possibility...I think they gave me the same stuff and ob said it was safe. Baby was fine. I'm sure the doctor wouldn't give you something that would hurt the baby. Besides the alternative would be to not treat the infection which I'd think would be worse.

same here.. I had a UTI before I officially knew I was pregnant. I made sure to tell doc. that it was possible and they told me the antibiotic was safe for pregnant women. Feel better!

Re: Did anyone have a UTI very early in their pregnancy? Please help

If you think you have a UTI, drink cranberry juice. Look for one with as little sugar as possible. I had a UTI around the holidays. Since I was BFing, I couldn't take certain medications. The cranberry juice really helps. (And it's something proactive that you can do until you have a chance to see the Dr. Plus it's completely natural.)

I hope you feel better Chat Icon

I had 2 UTIs during pregnancy. They are super common...I know its easier said than done not to worry about taking medication, but you have to think of it this way....the antibiotic for the infection is safe, and its waaaaaaay safer than the infection getting worse. The infection itself could spread to your kidneys and cause major harm to the fetus so its better to clear it up. Try not to worry. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just finished a course of Macrobid - I am 28 weeks pregnant. I dont believe the gyn would have prescribed this if he thought it was not safe and I searched online before I took it and found that it was safe to take. Hope you feel better soonChat Icon

Re: Did anyone have a UTI very early in their pregnancy? Please help

I had 4 UTIs while pregnant Chat Icon I was given Macrobid every single time. DD is perfectly fine and healthy.

Don't beat yourself up if you need to take meds from time to time. I had an AWFUL back injury during my pregnancy, and had to be on heavy doses of Vicodin during the last 23 weeks of my pregnancy. Vicodin!!! I was scared out of my mind and so angry that I was in that position. But as I said, DD is perfect in every way and is meeting (or beating) all her milestones so far! Chat Icon

I had a UTI my entire first and second trimester. They put me on a low dose antibiotic to keep it from going to my kidneys but they couldn't put me on anything strong bc of the pregnancy.

I heard its totally normal during pregnancy

Re: Did anyone have a UTI very early in their pregnancy? Please help

Believe it or not, I had a UTI for 14 weeks out of my pregnancy! I never had any symptoms, but my cultures always came back positive. I took 3 different antibiotics (including macrobid) and DD is just fine. Once I hit 20wks, it finally went away. I even went to see a urologist since it would not go away. I think sometimes these things just happen and there is nothing you can do to prevent it.

Re: Did anyone have a UTI very early in their pregnancy? Please help

I'm on the Macrobid now ( I'm 14 and 1/2 weeks pg) ..I have a bad UTI.

They are VERY common in PG and macrobid is a commonly prescribed antibiotic for it and PG.

I was on two differnt antibiotics with my son and he is fine. I think the risk of antibiotics is to the ears...and that is in 3rd trimester.

you should be fine. But leaving a UTI untreated can cause M/C and pre term labor.

I did not even know I was pregnant until 6 - 6 1/2 weeks. You dont share a bloodstream with the baby intil @ 6 weeks or so. Dont stress yourself, do what the doc recommendsChat Icon

ETA - I had a BAD UTI when I was @ 23 weeks, to the point I was spotting red. I was put on an antibiotic (dont remember the name). Check out my avatar pic, everything was fineChat Icon

Re: UPDATED Q - Did anyone have a UTI very early in their pregnancy and take AUGMENTIN? Please help

here is what I found regarding augmentin and pregnancy:

Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility
Long-term studies in animals have not been performed to evaluate carcinogenic potential.

Mutagenesis: The mutagenic potential of amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium was investigated in vitro with an Ames test, a human lymphocyte cytogenetic assay, a yeast test and a mouse lymphoma forward mutation assay, and in vivo with mouse micronucleus tests and a dominant lethal test. All were negative apart from the in vitro mouse lymphoma assay where weak activity was found at very high, cytotoxic concentrations.

Impairment of Fertility: Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium at oral doses of up to 1,200 mg/kg/day (5.7 times the maximum human dose, 1,480 mg/m2/day, based on body surface area) was found to have no effect on fertility and reproductive performance in rats dosed with a 2:1 ratio formulation of amoxicillin:clavulanate.

Teratogenic Effects:Pregnancy (Category B). Reproduction studies performed in pregnant rats and mice given amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium at oral dosages up to 1,200 mg/kg/day, equivalent to 7,200 and 4,080 mg/m2/day, respectively (4.9 and 2.8 times the maximum human oral dose based on body surface area), revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus due to amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium. There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Basically, this drug is safer than most for pregnant women. Most medications have much worse data than that....

Chat Icon You're not neurotic... I was the same as you... wanting to not take anything. However, keep in mind that a UTI also stresses your body, so you of course have to take somethig for it.

Judging by the spec sheets for this medication, I personally would be comfortable taking this medication, if that makes you feel any better....

get well soon Chat Icon

Thank you for your response Chat Icon This is what I read that has me SO upset. I am literally crying my eyes out over this. I am the type of person that takes nothing - not even tylenol or advil and watches everything from my shampoo to what I eat when pg.

I was at the park with DS when the nurse called and I felt I really didn't get a good answer as to why I have to take this instead of the Macrobid - I think I am going to call and ask to speak with the dr. when DS goes to nap.

Thanks again Chat Icon
